Five Tennessee Lady Vol student-athletes were recently honored when the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its regional awards. A trio of UT sophomores, Kaitlin Bargreen (Lake Stevens, Wash.), Chelsea Pemberton (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Dana Forbes (Cincinnati, Ohio), received All-South Region first or second-team recognition, while Bargreen joins junior Nicole Bold (Jackson, Miss.) and senior Kacey Montgomery (Apopka, Fla.) as CRCA National Scholar Athletes.
"I feel really pleased for Kaitlin and Chelsea to receive first-team honors for being a couple of the strongest student-athletes on our team," UT Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "I am also happy for Dana to have received second-team recognition, being that she had no rowing experience prior to college. These awards are a tribute to the hard work and dedication these individuals and the entire team have shown this season."
For Bargreen and Pemberton, this marks the second consecutive year that the pair has attained first-team regional status. Forbes, meanwhile, earned her first All-South Region recognition with a position on the second team. All three rowers have played a vital role in Tennessee's 14th-ranked Varsity 8+ shell, which this season is headed to the NCAA Championships for the first time since the program began in 1995-96.
The scholar-athlete award is the latest in a long line of honors that Montgomery has received during her career. The senior from Apopka, Fla., garnered first-team Verizon Academic All-America recognition and was named as the edsouth Lady Vol Scholar-Athlete of the year as a junior. Montgomery, who has now been named a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete for three years running, also has already received Verizon Academic All-District IV recognition this season. Bargreen and Bold, meanwhile, are each receiving the CRCA Scholar-Athlete status for the first time in their careers. Like Bargreen, Pemberton and Forbes, Montgomery and Bold have been important members of Tennessee's Varsity 8+ throughout the entire season.
The Lady Vols hope to end their season on a high note at the 2003 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships from May 30-June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
