BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Violeta Retamoza, who last week was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, and Jessica Shepley, who is coming off her best season as a sophomore, were both named to the first-team All-SEC squad Tuesday afternoon for the 2002-03 season. Retamoza finished one stroke behind Florida's Aimee Cho at the SEC Championships and is second in shot average this campaign.
Kristy McPherson, who was named the SEC Golfer of the Year leads the SEC in shot average and finished third at the SEC Championships behind Retamoza, after capturing back-to-back conference titles. Cho shot an even-par 216 in the three rounds of the SEC Tournament last weekend at the University Club in Lexington, Ky., to capture individual medalist honors.
Also on the first-team, SEC Champion Auburn notched spots for senior Celeste Troche, senior Danielle Downey and junior Diana Ramage. The Tigers won the SEC title by two shots over second-place Florida and eight-strokes over third-place Tennessee. Troche has made the first-team All-SEC in all four years of her collegiate career while Downey has made the squad in three of her four years at Auburn.
Vanderbilt junior Courtney Wood rounds out the first-team All-SEC selections. Wood, McPherson and Retamoza were the only three SEC golfers to win multiple tournaments during the 2002-03 season.
On the second-team All-SEC squad are Auburn's Maria Martinez, Florida's Amanda Dick and Brittany Straza of Florida. Georgia placed Kelly Froelich and Summer Sirmons on the second-team, while Mississippi State's Sofie Andersson and the Vanderbilt's Sarah Jacobs and May Wood were also included on the second-team roster.
