Junior Kylee Wells and senior Jaime Sanger made a strong statement for the Tennessee Lady Vols at day one of the NCAA Zone B Diving Regional on Friday, placing second and third, respectively, on the three-meter springboard. The top-five effort earns the pair a trip to the NCAA Championships from March 20-22, which will be held at the same venue, the Martin Aquatics Center.
Wells, a native of Russiaville, Ind., recorded a career-best score of 507.50, a performance which ranks her seventh in UT history for the 3m. Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.), who ranks sixth in school history on the 3m, tallied a score of 504.45 to place right behind her teammate. Both Lady Vols will be returning to NCAAs after a one-year absence, as Sanger attained All-America status on the 1m and 3m at the 2002 NCAA Championships, while Wells did so on the platform. The pair will join freshmen teammates Jacque Fessel and Noelle Bassi who have qualified for the meet in swimming events.
"I'm really proud of Kylee and Jaime," UT Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "They'll both have a chance to recapture the All-America form they showed at NCAAs two years ago. Some people thought Kylee was just a platform-specialist, but I believe she proved otherwise today."
UT sophomore Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.), who went to NCAAs as a rookie and became an All-American on the 1m and 3m, placed 26th on the 3m Friday with a score of 248.25. McCalley, however, will still be able to qualify for NCAAs if she places among the top four divers on the 1m tomorrow who did not place in the top five of the 3m today. Senior platform-specialist Stacy Binyon (Southlake, Texas), who placed 37th on the 3m, has the same opportunity to qualify and can earn a spot at NCAAs if she is among the top three finishers on the platform on Sunday who have not previously qualified.
The 1m begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT, while the platform will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
