KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The University of Tennessee women's track & field team will have an opportunity to try out the newly-resurfaced track at Florida's Stephen C. O'Connell Center as well as compete against eight Southeastern Conference foes Sunday afternoon when they line up at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
For the Lady Vols, who will return to the Sunshine State on March 1-2 for the SEC Indoor Championships, the meet will serve as a trial run at the UF facility as well as a chance to face off against several of the nation's top-ranked teams. SEC schools slated to participate include Trackwire Online No. 1-ranked Florida, No. 2 LSU, No. 5 South Carolina and No. 12 Auburn in addition to Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Also taking part are No. 22 Miami as well as Central Florida, East Carolina, Florida A&M, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, North Florida and South Florida.
Thus far in 2003 , Tennessee has five athletes who have reached NCAA provisional qualifying status. Those producing marks include sophomore Nicole Cook (Petersburg, Va.) in the 800m, senior Sharon Dickie (Grand Blanc, Mich.) in the 5000m, senior Christie Elwin (Adelaide, Australia) in the pole vault, sophomore Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Canada) in the 60m dash and sophomore Dee Dee Trotter (Decatur, Ga.) in the 400m. All but Olupona will be making the trip to Gainesville.
Among that traveling quartet, Cook is in the best standing on the national qualifying list. She ranks third in the NCAA and first in the SEC in the 800m at 2:07.54. Dickie is 10th nationally (1st SEC) in the 5000m at 16:42.11, Elwin rates 16th (5th SEC) in the pole vault at 12-9.50/3.90m, Trotter stands at 17th (6th SEC) in the 400m at 54.48. Dickie nearly provisionaled in two events last weekend, when she did so in the 5K and nearly managed that feat in the 3000m with a 9:37.63 reading. She comes in at number two this week among league runners in the 3K.
Other events with potential qualifiers include the mile, where redshirt freshman Brooke Novak (Kaukauna, Wis.) would need to shave 12 seconds off her season-best to dip below the provisional; the 400m, where Cook and sophomore Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) will continue to lower their times; and the 200m, where Trotter could match her NCAA invitation of a year ago in that race.
This weekend's meet is a non-scored competition and will be contested from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the O'Connell Center.
