UF is coached by former Lady Vol assistant coach Carolyn Peck who hails from nearby Jefferson City, Tenn. Matthew Mitchell, also a former Lady Vol staffer who served as a graduate assistant during the 2000-01 season, assists her. IN OUR LAST GAME The third-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols continued its perfect run through the Southeastern Conference with a dominating 86-43 victory over the Ole Miss Lady Rebels on Feb. 6, 2003, to move UT's record to 19-3 overall and 8-0 in the SEC. With the loss, UM fell to 12-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play. On this night, in front of the Lady Vols' largest home crowd of the season of 16,098, UT set season-highs as a team in rebounds (62) and blocked shots (nine) while doubling up the Lady Rebels on the scoreboard. Tennessee outrebounded UM 62-32 and nabbed an incredible 26 boards on the offensive glass, while dishing out 20 assists, holding Ole Miss to only 25.9% shooting from the floor on 15-of-58 and forcing 18 Lady Rebel turnovers. Gwen Jackson led UT in scoring for the sixth time in the last seven games and posted her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Shyra Ely (10 points and nine rebounds) and Courtney McDaniel (nine points and 11 rebounds in 13 minutes) just missed double-doubles, while freshman Tye'sha Fluker hit all four of her shots from the floor to tally 10 points. All 11 Lady Vols totaled more than three points and played 13 minutes or more against UM as UT's bench outscored Ole Miss' 50-11. Tennessee came out of the locker room with a 12-2 run highlighted by seven straight points from the senior Jackson and upped its advantage to 19-4 after an Ely lay-in with 10:34 to play in the first frame. The UT lead grew to as many as 17 points at 27-10 following a long trey by Brittany Jackson and two Fluker free throws, before a 9-1 Ole Miss run cut the deficit to 28-19 with 4:00 left. That's as close as the Lady Rebels would get again as two consecutive buckets by Fluker sent UT to the locker room up 12 at 35-23. The second stanza was all Tennessee as the Lady Vols outscored UM 51-20. A 24-7 run over the first 10:22 of the half was crucial in boosting the Orange & White to a comfortable 59-30 advantage. A McDaniel lay-up extended UT's lead to 38 points at 72-34 with 5:15 to play as the lead eventually reached as many as 47 points at 84-37 following a LaToya Davis three-pointer. VARIETY IS THE SPICE This season, the Lady Vols will take on teams from 10 different conferences. LADY VOLS ON TV Nineteen Lady Vol regular season games will be on television this year. Upcoming games on TV in 2002-03 include Florida (CSS) and Georgia (FOX). ON THIS DAY Tennessee is 9-1 all-time on February 9. The Lady Vols are 5-0 at home and 4-1 on the road. The last game on the 9th was a 1998 win at Mississippi State, 74-52. LOOKING BACK Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 19-2 and had just defeated Arkansas in Knoxville, 93-65. TV CHANGES, AGAIN ESPN has decided NOT to pick up the Tennessee at Auburn game on Feb. 16. Tip time reverts to 2 p.m. CT. Tennessee's game at LSU on Feb. 23 was added to the CSS schedule. Tip-off is now at 4 p.m. CT. OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK The Lady Vols are in the Thursday-Sunday SEC format this week. UT- FLORIDA All-Time Series Meetings
*denotes overtime FLORIDA SERIES Tennessee leads the series with Florida, 31-1. The lone Lady Gator victory came in the 1997 meeting in Gainesville where Florida upended the eventual 1997 NCAA Champs, 71-62. ONCE A GATOR Lady Vol associate head coach Mickie DeMoss was a former head coach of the Lady Gators. She served from 1979-83. OLD HOME WEEK When UF travels to Knoxville, it will be "old home week" for both camps, again. Carolyn Peck, a Jefferson City, Tenn., girl has taken over as Lady Gator head coach. Peck served as an assistant on Tennessee's staff from 1993-95. Matthew Mitchell, a former Lady Vol graduate assistant is in his third season as a full-time assistant coach for UF. PECK'S THE ONLY ONE UT coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but Carolyn Peck is the only one to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov. 15, 1998 in the State Farm TipOff Classic in West Lafayette. The defeat snapped UT's 46-game consecutive winning streak that was second only to Louisiana Tech's 54-game winning streak. UConn recently broke Tech's NCAA record. GAME REPORT 23 - FLORIDA Just five games ago, the Lady Vols traveled to Gainesville, Fla., and hung a stinging 94-53 loss on a struggling Florida Lady Gator team. Florida (8-12, 0-7 SEC) visits Knoxville this weekend looking for their first win in the SEC this season. FLORIDA'S PROBABLE STARTERS 32-Brittany Davis, F, 6-2, Fr., 4.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg LADY VOLS VS. LADY GATORS STAT COMPARISON
OUR LAST MEETING WITH FLORIDA In front of a crowd of 2,646 at the Stephen O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla., on Jan. 19, 2003, the #5-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols moved its Southeastern Conference record to a perfect 3-0 with a dominating 94-53 win over the Florida Gators. On the afternoon, two Lady Vols set new scoring career-highs as senior Gwen Jackson turned in a masterful performance with 32 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 22 first half tallies, while freshman Shanna Zolman hit 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc to record a then career-best 19 points. Junior Ashley Robinson posted a team-high 10 rebounds for the Orange and White. UT controlled every phase of the contest as the Lady Vols shot 52.1% from the field while holding Florida to 32.8%. Tennessee also won the battle of the boards 53-31, dished 25 assists, hit 11-of-16 three-pointers and outscored the Gators 52-17 during the first frame. The Lady Vols, and particularly Gwen Jackson, came out of the locker room ready to take control as the senior exploded for 13 of UT's first 15 points as Tennessee roared to a 15-5 lead. The onslaught continued for the Lady Vols as two buckets from Brittany Jackson, a three by Shyra Ely and two consecutive triples by Zolman helped boost UT's lead to an incredible 33-7 with 7:47 to play. After four straight Gator points cut the deficit to 22 points at 33-11, Kara Lawson hit a trey and Gwen Jackson scored seven consecutive points on a 10-0 Lady Vol run as the lead grew to 43-11. The advantage eventually grew to as many as 37 points, following a Zolman jumper, before the teams adjourned to the locker room with UT leading 52-17. The second half was more of an even battle as UT outscored the Gators 42-36, however, the game's outcome had long since been decided. Florida crawled back to within 29 points at 63-34 but another UT burst, ignited by more scoring by Gwen Jackson, consecutive buckets by Zolman and six points from Ely, pushed the Lady Vol advantage to 80-42. UT's lead eventually reached 44 points at 92-48 before a late Gator push narrowed the gap to 94-53. GATORS ROOKIE ASSAULT If you peruse the Florida roster you will notice the Lady Gators have five rookies. If you checked out Coach Carolyn Peck's starting line-up the past three games you'd find the same five as starters. Talk about a youth movement! CAREER STATS VS. FLORIDA Three Lady Vols have career scoring averages in double figures against the Lady Gators. Shanna Zolman leads the way with a 19.0 ppg average, followed by Gwen Jackson with 16.0 ppg and Kara Lawson's 12.0 ppg. Shyra Ely is the team's leading rebounder with 7.5 rpg. Second on the list is Gwen Jackson with 7.2 ppg. Returning Lady Vol career statistics versus Florida can be found on p. 75 in the 2002-03 Tennessee media guide. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Duke, 55-76, in the Jimmy V Classic on Nov. 24, 2002. Since then, UT has won four games on a neutral court. IN A SELECT CLUB When the 2002-03 season started, two SEC coaches were in a select club. Carolyn Peck of Florida and Melanie Balcomb of Vanderbilt were the only SEC coaches with a winning record over Tennessee's Pat Summitt. Peck registered a 1-0 record over Summitt while at Purdue, while Balcomb collected a 1-0 slate as Xavier's head coach. Earlier this season, Summitt evened her record with Peck taking a 94-53 win over the Lady Gators and duplicated that feat with a 81-67 win over Balcomb's Vandy club on Feb. 2. 186 WINS IN OUR LAST 204 GAMES The Lady Vols have won an amazing 186 games in their last 204 basketball contests (.911) spanning six seasons (starting with NCAA Tournament play in 1997). UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in 1997-98, turned in a 31-3 worksheet in 1998-99, a 33-4 mark in 1999-2000, a 31-3 overall record in 2000-01, 29-5 in 2001-02 and 19-3 in 2002-03 AVERAGE SCORE The average score of all UT-Florida games is 85.3 (UT) and 64.8 (UF). COMMON OPPONENTS Outside of the SEC schedule, Tennessee and Florida share only one regular season common opponent. Florida lost to George Washington, 74-55, on January 26. Tennessee defeated the Colonials, 83-61, in Knoxville on November 26. UT & UF RANKING OUR OPPONENTS IN 2002-03 The #3 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols have faced 13 ranked teams in 22 games (59% of its opponents) while Florida has taken on six ranked teams in 20 games (30% of its opponents). After the Florida contest, UT will play three games versus ranked teams.
NO SUNSHINE GIRLS Currently, no Lady Vol players hail from the state of Florida. Former Lady Vols from Florida include slam-dunk queen Michelle Snow, Lady Vol Hall of Famer Bridgette Gordon, and Pam Marr. IN OUR LAST MEETING IN KNOXVILLE WITH FLORIDA The #2-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers kicked their running game up a notch and dealt the #12/15-ranked Florida Lady Gators an 86-66 defeat on Jan. 31, 2002, in Knoxville. UT coach Pat Summitt employed her ninth different line-up of the season in search of a combo that would get the team off to a fast start - she may have found it against the Lady Gators. UT jumped out to a 7-0 lead (17:08) and then a 16-5 advantage (14:48) after a Tasha Butts' trey. Florida then went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 20-all with 9:44 to play in the first half. It was the Lady Vols' turn to make a run and a 15-2 spurt over three minutes gave UT a 35-22 lead at 6:34. Tennessee took its largest lead of the first half after a Gwen Jackson fastbreak lay-up with 1:52 to play in the first half produced a 41-26 Lady Vol lead. UT took a 43-31 advantage into the locker room at the half behind 10 points from junior guard Kara Lawson. In the second stanza it was all Lady Vols as three consecutive Lawson buckets found Tennessee ahead 61-37 with 12:01 to play. Gwen Jackson gave UT its largest lead of the second half with 7:28 to play connecting on a putback for a 33-point bulge, 78-45. For the game, five Lady Vols reached double-figures led by Lawson's 18-points. Also in extra digits were Gwen Jackson with 17 points off the bench (6-7 FG and 5-5 FT), senior Michelle Snow with a 16 point and 10 rebound double-double, rookie Loree Moore with 11 points and a game high eight assists, and Butts with 10 points, also off the bench. UT connected on 47% of their field goals, 36% three-pointers and a healthy 77% from the charity stripe. Tennessee controlled the boards with a 44-34 advantage. UT committed 17 turnovers on 11 Florida steals while forcing 20 miscues on 13 UT thefts. The Lady Vols reserves tallied 35 points while the Lady Gator bench scored just 10 points. THE SEC Tennessee has a 310-51 record all-time versus the SEC. Mississippi State is the only team who has never recorded a win over UT. Florida and Arkansas have the next fewest victories at 1 each. OVER 100,000 . . . AGAIN The Tennessee Lady Vols have gone over the 100,000 mark in home attendance for the ninth consecutive seasons. Against Mississippi, the Lady Vols cleared that mark - to date, 109,359 fans have been counted at UT games with four more regular season home games to play. Last season, Tennessee attracted 200,132 patrons to 14 home games.
MOVED UP TO #3 IN THE POLLS The Lady Vols have moved up to the third spot in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN/WBCA polls this week. Tennessee started the season ranked number two, dropped to fourth/fifth place and have now landed in the third spot. SISTERS OF SWAT Tennessee held a shot rejection party against Ole Miss on Feb. 6, 2003. A little more than one-sixth of the Lady Rebels 58 shot attempts were blocked as the Orange and White recorded nine blocks. Rookie Tye'sha Fluker tallied four swats while junior center Ashley Robinson crushed three attempts. Sophomore Shyra Ely had back-to-back blocks in one series of shots. MOORE'S QUITE THE DISH Sophomore guard Loree Moore eclipsed the 100 assist mark for the second straight year. Moore currently has tallied 103 assists in 22 games. As a rookie, Moore handed out 133 helpers in 34 games for the most assists ever by a rookie. Lady Vol all-time assist leader Dawn Marsh tallied 191 assists in 34 games during her sophomore season to also lead that category. Z-STREAK ENDED Rookie Shanna Zolman had a streak of 15-consecutive free throws snapped in the win over Ole Miss on Feb. 6, 2003. Zolman started the streak against Florida in Gainesville on Jan. 19. On the season, the sharpshooter has connected on 34-38 free throws for .898. 2003 NCAA TOURNAMENT ACTION - KNOXVILLE, TENN. Credential requests for the NCAA First and Second Rounds and the Mideast Regionals to be held in Knoxville, Tenn., in the Thompson-Boling Arena have been distributed to the local media. Deadline for turning in the credential request form is March 1. JUST SEVEN TO GO IN REGULAR SEASON Less than a month and seven games remain in the regular season for the Lady Vols. UT will face one non-conference team, TCU, and three ranked teams in SEC play. The make-or-break week for the SEC title starts on Feb. 20 against #17 Georgia in Knoxville, goes to #4 LSU in Baton Rouge on Feb. 23 and concludes on Feb. 27 versus #18 Vanderbilt in Thompson-Boling Arena. HERE'S STOP AND GO FOR YA During the Arkansas game on Jan. 30, 2003, the clock stopped 93 times during the course of the game. Talk about carpel tunnel syndrome. When all the media timeouts, team timeouts, fouls, turnovers and trips to the free throw line were figured in ... the count came back at 93 times for the stoppage of the clock. I know it doesn't mean much, but have you ever stopped to think about it?? LADY VOLS ARE STINGY IN THE FIRST HALF Tennessee has held about one-half of its opposition to under 25 first half points in 10 games this season. Six schools did not make it out of the "teens against Tennessee - 14 points (Southern Cal, Louisiana Tech, Puerto Rico Mayaguez), 17 points (Florida), 18 points (DePaul), and 19 points (Army). The other schools scored -- 20 points (St. Louis), 23 points (Stanford and Ole Miss) and 25 points (Notre Dame). IF YOU HOLD OUR FG% IN THE 30s . . . Tennessee has shot in the 30 percent range from the field in five games this season netting three losses. The Lady Vols struggled from the field shooting just 30% - Texas (.357), Connecticut (.353) and Duke (.316). However, UT defeated Notre Dame shooting just 35% and Ole Miss (39%) to defy the odds. The Irish barely shot 30% after notching 22% FG in the first half. IF THE OPPONENTS' FG% IS IN THE 40s . . . Well, typically you'll beat Tennessee. Duke, Texas and Connecticut shot over 40% and all three recorded wins over the Lady Vols as Duke shot 45%, UConn 41% and Texas 40% of its field goal tries. The exceptions are South Carolina who shot a blistering 54.5 (and lost by 19 points), Vandy1 who shot 50% and lost by 14, Auburn, who shot 43.3%, Arkansas, who shot 42.2% and DePaul, who shot 41.5% and all lost to UT. SUMMITT INDUCTED INTO YET ANOTHER HALL OF FAME University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in Nashville on Jan. 24, 2003, at the annual awards banquet. Additionally, Lady Vol senior tennis player Vilmarie Castellvi was also honored by the organization as one of its three female amateur athletes of the year. Summitt recently added to her legend by becoming the first women's coach to reach the 800-win plateau with a 76-57 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons on Jan. 14, 2003. In doing so, the Henrietta, Tenn., native became only the fourth Division I coach to reach the 800-win milestone and performed the feat faster than any coach in history, doing so in only 961 games. She counts six national titles (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998), 13 NCAA Final Four appearances, 11 Southeastern Conference regular-season titles, 10 SEC Tournament championships and 16 Kodak All-Americans among her many achievements. Summitt already has been inducted into both the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. She was also named as the Naismith Coach of the Century in April 2000. SUMMITT COLLECTS WIN #806 The victory over Ole Miss was UT coach Pat Summitt's 807th of her 29-year career. She currently ranks sixth among all coaches (men's or women's) in all-time victories (as of 2-8-03). Summitt is closing in on Jerry Johnson of cross-state college LeMoyne-Owen.
DIAL 1-800-SUMMITT On Tues., Jan. 14, 2003, University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball coach Pat Summitt became the first women's coach to join the exclusive 800 victory club with a 76-57 victory over #25/24-ranked DePaul in Knoxville, Tenn. Summitt joined an elite group of three other NCAA Division I coaches who previously achieved the 800 milestone - Dean Smith (North Carolina) 879, 2. Adolph Rupp (Kentucky) 876, 3. Jim Phelan (Mt. St. Mary's) 826. What is so amazing is that Summitt achieved 800 victories in just 29 seasons while Smith finished with 879 wins in 36 seasons, Rupp with 876 victories in 41 seasons and Phelan with 827 w's is still going strong in his 49th season. Additionally, 46% of the 966 total games coached by Summitt have been contested against ranked teams. WOW! JODY JOINS THE 800 CLUB - BOBBY DOES TOO Almost a week to the day that Tennessee coach Pat Summitt became the first women's coach to reach 800 wins, she was joined by Texas coach Jody Conradt who claimed her 800th win an upset victory over #7 Texas Tech, 69-58, in Austin, Texas. What's amazing is how quickly Summitt closed the gap on Conradt who had 680 wins on Dec. 21, 1996, while Summitt had 604 trailing the Texas coach by 76 victories. After UT's undefeated 39-0 season in 1997-98, Summitt closed the gap to 44 games. Last season, Summitt had narrowed the victory gap to just two games 781 (Conradt) and 779 (Summitt) on Feb. 12, 2002, when Texas upset Tennessee in Knoxville. Both coaches sported 788 wins to start the 2002-03 season. Coach Bob Knight of Texas Tech entered the 800 Club on his second try as his Red Raiders defeated Nebraska (75-49) on Wed., Feb. 5, 2003. With Knight's inclusion, three coaches have entered the 800 wins club in the last 22 days. What's so amazing is that the 800 Victory Club had just four members entering this season and their ranked have doubled to eight coaches. Summitt, Conradt and Knight joined the ranks from the NCAA Division I ranks while Jerry Johnson of LeMoyne-Owen (NCAA D-II) was first in the 800 Club this season winning number 800 on Nov. 22, 2002 with a 78-73 win over Christian Brothers College in front of 987 fans at home. SENIOR TREYS Seniors Kara Lawson and Gwen Jackson are the Lady Vol leaders from three-point land. Lawson has tossed up 101 treys and nailed 46 for 46%. Coming into this season, the senior guard from Alexandria, VA, owned just about every three-point school record. Lawson's career totals entering this season was 179 of 446 for 40%. She has now attempted over 500 in her career. Gwen Jackson, 21-45 for 47% in the trey department has already surpassed her three-point total for all of last season - 28 games - where she connected on just 9 of 28 for 32%. At the rate she's going, Jackson will equal her career three-point totals coming into the season (29-75 for 38% in 99 games). HATE TO GUSH, BUT. . . For the first time in school history, the Tennessee Lady Vols rank first in the SEC in three-point percentage and are rated fourth in the nation. Additionally, three Lady Vols are ranked among the top five best trey shooters in the SEC as seniors Gwen Jackson (.467) and Kara Lawson (.455) are ranked one and two, while frosh Shanna Zolman is fifth at .450. WHAT'S WITH THE 63-62 LOSSES THIS SEASON? Interestingly enough, the last two Tennessee defeats this season have been by identical scores of 63-62 to Texas and Connecticut and both came on the road. WE NEED A TOUGHER SCHEDULE . . . HA, HA In this week's poll, the Lady Vols face 15 of the Top 25 during the season including six SEC schools. Already, UT has played the #1, #3/2, #5, #11, #12, #13, #14, #15, #21 (twice), #22 and #24 ranked teams in the country (ranking at time game was played) - 13 of our 21 games against ranked opponents. STEPPING OUTSIDE OF THE SEC The Feb. 11 contest against TCU is Tennessee's final non-conference game of the season. With the exception of that game, UT will be on a steady diet of 13 SEC games leading up to the SEC Tournament in Little Rock, Ark., Mar. 6-9. LATEST RPI Tennessee (.707) is #1 in the latest RPI rankings released Feb. 5. Number two is Connecticut (.701), followed by 3. Duke (.689), 4. Texas Tech (.671) and 5. Kansas St. (.663), respectively. LATEST STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Tennessee (.697) is #1 in the latest Strength of Schedule rankings released Feb.5. Following the Lady Vols are: 2. Oklahoma (.653), 3. TCU (.650), 4. Vanderbilt. (.647), and 5.N.C. State (.644). Read Even More with the Complete Game Notes in PDF Format |
