Tennessee's track and field squad opened the first update of the Team Power Rankings in the top spot. The rankings, sponsored by the U.S. Track Coaches Association, measure a team's dual-meet strength and capability across all events. Currently, the Volunteers sum 249.65 points according to the USTCA formula, ahead of runner-up Brigham Young's opening count of 240.11. The season-opening, first-place ranking reflects Tennessee's win two weekends ago in a six-team field at the SEC Eastern Division Challenge, the meet most closely approximating a dual meet on the 2003 indoor schedule.
Tennessee has captured the Team Power Rankings title eight times since 1991. The Vols swept the indoor and outdoor recognition last year.
