The #11 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad closed the door on the 2003 Arizona Wildcat Invitational in fourth place with an 897 (307-295-295) to finish behind tournament titlist #8 Pepperdine (294-292-290=876), second-place #6 Southern California (308-286-296=890) and third-place Arizona State (290-305-300=895). Overall, the Big Orange knocked off four ranked teams (#1 Arizona, #3 Vanderbilt, #9 Washington and #14 UCLA), three of which are currently rated above UT in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Ratings. Individually, Arizona's Erica Blasberg held off a furious third-round attack by USC's Mikaela Parmlid, who fired a five-under 66, to capture the Arizona Wildcat medal with a 210 (69-73-68).
Freshman Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) carded the third-lowest third round in program history with a three-under 68 to finish with a fifth-place 218 (78-72-68). Retamoza stormed back from a first-day 42nd-place tie to notch her third career top-5 placing. Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) captured her sixth-consecutive top-15 finish with a 15th-place tying 223 (77-73-73). Shepley now stands four tournaments shy of former Lady Vol Abby Pearson's program standard set in her initial 10 tournaments.
Freshman Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) posted a 24th-place 226 (74-76-76), while junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) carded a 55th-place tying 236 (78-75-83) and classmate Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) shot a 237 (84-75-78) to finish in a 57th-place tie. UT continues its spring season March 9-11 in Gainesville, Fla., at the Lady Gator Invitational.
