TRACKWIRE RANKING I SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Volunteers open up their indoor track one last time Friday with the Tennessee Classic. The meet takes place in Stokely Athletics Center, as field events begin at noon and events on the track get underway at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
"The Tennessee Classic is our final tune-up for the SEC Indoor Championships," head coach Bill Webb said. "We'll try to smooth out Jonathan Wade's start in the short sprint. Several of our hurdlers will work on improving their stock. This meet is also valuable to our field event guys in the pole vault, throws and decathletes."
While Tennessee won't send its entire roster to the line, the Volunteers plan on suiting up several competitors bound for the SEC meet next week. As mentioned, provisionally-qualified sprinter Jonathan Wade should get his number called in the 55m dash at 5:20 p.m. Robert Boulware lines up for the 55m hurdles at 6:25 p.m. Defending SEC indoor and outdoor champion Rocky Danners and Tim Mack, a former Vol who managed a fifth-place world ranking in 2002, are scheduled to grace the pole vault runway at 5:30 p.m. Additionally, decathletes who expect to figure prominently in the Vol pentathlon effort at the SEC meet next weekend should be sprinkled throughout all the events as their training regimens dictate.
The field of 16 preregistered teams dwarfs the smaller field for the previous home indoor meet in January. The 16-team field includes Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Anderson College, Carson-Newman, Claflin College, Cumberland College, Eastern Kentucky, Emory, Fisk, Fort Valley State, Gardner-Webb, Kentucky State, Knoxville College, Livingstone College, Morehouse and Tennessee.
