KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The University of Tennessee women will find themselves in unusual territory when they run at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Athens, Ga., on Nov. 3. The Lady Vols, ranked 26th in this week's FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Poll, will be the highest-ranked SEC school in the meet.
As a matter of fact, Tennessee is the only ranked conference team this week after Arkansas dropped from 19th in the Oct. 13 poll to only receiving votes in the current tabulation. The Lady Vols, meanwhile, gained two places from their previous No. 28 designation.
There was also a change at the top of the leaderboard, as defending NCAA champion BYU was knocked from the No. 1 perch by perennial power Stanford. The Cardinal collected seven first-place votes to the Cougars' six and moved past their long-time foes by one point, 384 to 383, to unseat BYU from the catbird's seat for the first time all season.
Closing out the top five were North Carolina State (355), Arizona State (350) and North Carolina (337). UT's South Region nemesis Florida State is 30th with 20 poll points, while SEC compadre Arkansas received only eight points this week.
