ATHENS, Ga.
The University of Tennessee divers continued their strong performance at the Georgia Diving Invitational where sophomore Lauryn McCalley and senior Jaime Sanger placed third and fourth, respectively, in the one-meter springboard on Saturday.
McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.), who led the 45-diver field after the preliminary rounds, finished with a total score of 538.55, while Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.) was right behind with a tally of 516.80. Alabama's Lane Bassham won the competition with a score of 555.10.
"I'm pretty happy with our performance today," UT Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "Lauren missed her second to last dive in the finals a little bit, which could have cost her the competition. But overall, we're glad to be competing in such a large field where all of the SEC is present with the exception of Arkansas."
Other Lady Vols in the event included freshman Ashley Showalter (Knoxville, Tenn.) who placed 19th with a score of 225.30, junior Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) in 22nd with 220.25 and senior Stacy Binyon (Southlake, Texas) in 31st with 192.10.
In the one-meter "Bulldog Shootout" competition also held on Saturday, the UT pair of Sanger and McCalley rebounded to claim first and second place, respectively. In this competition, the top six divers from the earlier one-meter event competed in a five round format in which the lowest scoring diver was eliminated after each round. Going in to the final round, only Sanger and McCalley remained and Sanger's mark of 52.50 was enough to outscore her teammate and win the competition.
The Georgia Diving Invitational will conclude on Sunday with the women's platform competition.
Scores from the preliminary rounds of the one- and three- meter springboard events at Georgia will carry over to UT's dual meets against South Carolina and Penn State on Jan. 11, because the divers will be away competing at the America's Cup Diving Meet in Bloomington, Ind., Jan. 7-12. In the one-meter, Tennessee placed first, second and fourth against the Nittany Lions, while grabbing first and third place against USC.
