The No. 24 University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team will host three-time NCAA champion No. 3 Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. for its final home meet of the season.
Tennessee is 4-2 (3-0 SEC) this season after dropping a 204.5-147-5 decision to Northwestern on Jan. 18. In its last SEC action, the Big Orange downed then-No. 19 South Carolina, 135-107, in Columbia on Jan. 11. The meet marked the second time this season UT had defeated a team ranked 19th in the NCAA, as the Lady Vols beat then-No. 19 Miami (Fla.), 131-112, on Nov. 8. Coincidentally, the Nov. 8 meet against the Hurricanes was the last time Tennessee competed in the friendly confines of the Student Aquatic Center.
Georgia, meanwhile, comes to Knoxville with an overall record of 8-1 (3-1 SEC) this season. The lone loss for the Lady Bulldogs came against No. 2 Florida by a score of 137-106, in Gainesville on Nov. 23. UGA has defeated four opponents ranked in the top 11, including No. 6 SMU, No. 7 Texas, No. 9 California and No. 11 North Carolina. In addition, the Lady Bulldogs return 16 letterwinners from a squad that placed second at the NCAA Championships last season.
The Big Orange trails Georgia 21-4 in the all-time series between the two squads. Most recently, the Lady Bulldogs defeated UT, 220-99, on Oct. 27, 2000 in Knoxville. The last win for Tennessee in the series came on Nov. 3, 1989 in Athens by a score of 85-57.
The meet will take place using the 13-event format in which both the women's and men's one-meter springboard competition will start at noon, after which Senior Day festivities will begin. Swimming is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the 200y medley relay, followed by the 1000y free, 200y free, 50y free, 200y IM, men's three-meter springboard, 200y fly, 100y free, 200y back, 500y free, women's three-meter springboard, 200y breast and 200y free relay.
Tennessee will close out its dual-meet season against No. 2 Florida on Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. in Gainesville.
