Freshman Jonathan Wade wasted little time moving into the Southeastern Conference's fast lane. The rookie sprinter from Shreveport, La., won nods as the first SEC Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the 2003 season, by virtue of his winning performance last Thursday at the Tennessee All-Comers Meet.
Just 10 days removed from the gridiron, Wade sprinted to an SEC-leading, albeit on a slow competitive weekend, 6.26 clocking in the 55m dash, his first race as a collegian. The time stands as a provisional qualfier for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. While the time just reached the provisional threshold and will need improvement before a ticket to the NCAAs can be secured, Wade's effort stands as a solid opener.
Wade and fellow sprinters Sean Lambert and Jabari Greer await a bigger test this weekend at Virginia Tech's Kroger Invitational.
