A plaque honoring Jackson, Tenn., native Van Thompson, a Tennessee football letterman in 1939-40, was unveiled in the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center this afternoon on the campus of The University of Tennessee.
Bill and Marsha Thompson of Memphis made a gift to UT's athletic capital fundraising efforts to create the "Van Thompson Coaches Locker Room." The Van Thompson Coaches Locker Room is currently located adjacent to the Tennessee player locker room and is steps away from the Robert E. White Indoor Practice Field.
The Thompson's gift will be used in the expansion of the Neyland-Thompson Center, slated to begin early in 2003.
"We proud to have the name of Van Thompson permanently displayed in the Neyland-Thompson Center, where Tennessee football players and coaches present and future prepare for practice and games," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Mike Hamilton. "We also are grateful for Bill and Marsha's gift which is an investment in the future of the Volunteer athletic program."
