KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Tennessee's Frank Francois advanced through the first qualifying round of the 800M run Tuesday night at the IAAF/Coca-Cola World Junior Championships at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Francois took second in his heat and 12th overall to secure a lane in the 800M semifinals Wednesday night.
Francois, a rising sophomore from Burke, Va., completed the two-lapper in 1:50.17 running in heat three, a shade off the 1:49.86 clocking by heat leader David Fiegen of Luxemborg. Francois' lifetime best offering of 1:48.99 came in the finals of the USA Junior Championships to write the Virginian's ticket to Jamaica.
Kenya's Alex Kipchirchir led all competitors with a 1:48.26 effort in heat two. The other American in the contest, USA Junior champ Richard Smith, also qualified with a 1:50.17.
The semifinals of the 800M run will be held Wednesday night. Competitors advancing from the semifinals will compete in the finals Friday night.
