Junior rower Kacey Montgomery (Apopka, Fla.) has been named the 2002 edsouth Scholar Athlete of the Year by the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer Athletic Department's marketing department. This selection follows her being named a first-team Verizon Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America earlier this month.
Montgomery, a 4.0 student majoring in microbiology, is a three-year member of the Lady Vol rowing team and has rowed with the varsity squad for most of that time. Her shell finished first in six races this spring including a gold medal in the Grand Finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. During the fall, Montgomery's boat was victorious in the Club 8+ portion of the Head of the Charles regatta, the most prestigious rowing event in the world. Due to these outstanding performances, she was selected as the team's Most Valuable Rower. Montgomery is a two-time All-South Region selection by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. In addition, she was recently named to the CRCA Scholar-Athlete team for the second-straight year.
