MILLER IMPROVES PROVISIONAL IN JAVELIN AT GEORGIA TECH INVITATIONAL

ATLANTA, Ga.
University of Tennessee sophomore Denita Miller registered an improvement in her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the javelin late Friday night at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The question is, was it enough to earn a trip to the upcoming national championship meet?
Less than a week after finishing second at the SEC Outdoor Championships with a provisional throw of 153 feet, six inches, Miller came up with a season-best heave of 155-4 to place sixth overall and third among collegians at the last chance meet. The mark is the second longest of her career, following a measurement of 159-3 at the 2001 Sea Ray Relays.
Now the Liberal, Kan., native will have to wait and see whether the effort was good enough to earn her a ticket to Baton Rouge, La., for the NCAA competition on May 29-June 1. Based upon the latest national qualifying list, her mark in Atlanta ranks her 27th. A total of 21 athletes were chosen a year ago, but Miller cannot be ruled out because the number of people on the qualifying list who will actually compete in that event won't be declared until next week.
A year ago, Miller traveled to Eugene, Ore., and finished 12th at the NCAA meet. Her place among the top eight Americans in the event garnered her All-America distinction, making her only the third Lady Vol in history to do so with that implement.
