NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Top-ranked Tennessee left a good portion of the roster at home to train, but the Volunteers who did travel to the midstate for the Commodore Invitational represented them in fine form. The smallish Tennessee contingent captured six wins against the field comprised of 14 regional schools and a handful of unattached competitors.
"It was an off week for many of our guys, but those who went accomplished some things," head coach Bill Webb said. "We had a number of lifetime bests. Jabari's (Greer) hurdles time may get him in the NCAA meet."
Of Tennessee's six wins, Greer's spoke loudest because it places him on the bubble for making the cut for NCAA Outdoor meet. After impressively opening his collegiate 110M hurdling career under 14.00 seconds -- 13.95w -- at last week's Sea Ray Relays, Greer continued to trim time off with a winning, career-best time of 13.78, a NCAA provisional qualifier. Co-captain Hassaan Stamps sealed the deal on a Tennessee hurdles sweep with a season-best 51.28 clocking in the 400M hurdles. Stamps added a season-best 14.11 silver finish in the 110M hurdles.
Damion Drummond found his way around the two-lapper the fastest with a career-best 1:51.73 time in the 800M run. The fast track was kind to the Vols, who saw eight of nine squad members in the running events notch career or season best times.
The highlight in the field events occurred in the sky with a top three Tennessee sweep in the pole vault. Clint Binder won the event with a 17-0 clearance, the best in his senior outdoor campaign. Chandler Rice took second with a 15-6 1/4 takeoff. Decathlete Brett Frykberg cleared the bar at 13-0 1/4.
However, Steve Pitlik took field MVP honors for UT with the hammer title, a 183-9 measurement, and second in the discus with a 169-5 mark to cap a solid day for the Vol senior. Additionally, sophomore Matt Dressler flung the javelin 190-3 down the field for a winner.
The Volunteers will spend the week deciding their strategy and travel squad for next week's Penn Relays, one of the most famous and tradition-rich meets in U.S. track and field history, in Philadelphia, Pa.
