Freshman University of Tennessee diver Lauryn McCalley got her summer schedule underway on Saturday with the three-meter springboard competition at the USA Diving World Cup Trials at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. McCalley advanced to the semifinal round, but did not earn a spot in the evening finals.
The Moultrie, Ga., native was one of 17 of the nation's best divers to begin the competition. She tallied a total of 268.50 through the first five dives to sit in 10th as the field was cut to 12 competitors. The defending Senior National three-meter champion was placed in the first of two semifinal groups where the top three from each six-woman group advanced to the finals. McCalley finished 6th in her group, and 9th overall, with a total score of 507.54. Kimiko Hirai Soldati of Woodlands Diving won the event with a score of 794.51 while Michelle Davison of Miami was second with a tally of 711.75.
Soldati and Davison, along with the top two from Sunday's platform competition, will represent the United States at the World Cup in July in Spain. The top four in each event will also compete at the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix in May in Coral Springs, Fla. McCalley will next be in action as she represents the U.S. at the Canada Cup in Montreal, Quebec, over the weekend of May 3-5.
