KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Following an outstanding outing at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, freshman diver Lauryn McCalley has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff for the period ending on March 24. She is the third member of the Lady Vol swimming and diving team to earn the nod this season as fellow diver Jaime Sanger and swimmer Monica Shannahan have taken the distinction twice each.
McCalley had a standout freshman season for the Orange and White that was capped by a pair of All-America honors last weekend at the 2002 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Texas at Austin. The Moultrie, Ga., native held her ground against a field that included former World Champions and Olympians to reach the finals of both her events. McCalley finished sixth on the one-meter springboard and followed that up with seventh on the three-meter.
With those accomplishments, she becomes just the second Lady Vol freshman to reach the final of both events at the NCAA Championships and just the fifth Tennessee diver overall to accomplish the feat. McCalley earned a spot in the NCAA field by finishing second on the one-meter and sixth on the three-meter at the Zone B Championships. During her freshman season, she won the one-meter titles at the SEC Invitational and in a double-dual meet against LSU and Kentucky. McCalley also won the three-meter crowns at the Indiana Invitational and against Arkansas and Florida. The rookie also tallied six second-place finishes on the one-meter in her rookie campaign and was runner-up on the three-meter four times.
McCalley's collegiate season is ending, but she will soon begin her national competition schedule. She is the defending three-meter champion at the U.S. Senior National Championships and will compete next month for a chance to represent the United States at the World Cup.
