KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
University of Tennessee women's athletics director Joan Cronan announced today that she has accepted the resignation of Lady Vol head track & field coach Myrtle Chester Ferguson.
"Myrtle tendered her resignation effective immediately," said Cronan. "I have asked assistant coaches Scott Bennett and Rodney Rothoff to jointly assume the responsibilities of the track and field program for the remainder of the season. Additionally, former Canadian Olympian and Lady Vol sprint standout Erica Witter (1996-99) has been asked to serve as an interim assistant for the sprinters," added Cronan.
Ferguson, a Lady Vol All-American (1980-84), had been the head coach of the Lady Vol Track & Field team since 1998, assuming the duties after serving as an assistant coach in 1997-98. During her tenure at Tennessee, 19 athletes earned 37 All-America honors under her watch.
"Scott and Rodney bring a wealth of track and field experience to their new roles. And we are fortunate to have Erica on board to assist us with the sprinters," said Cronan. "We will begin the search immediately for a new head coach."
Tennessee has four more meets plus the SEC and NCAA Championships remaining on its 2002 outdoor schedule.
