Tennessee finished 12th at the 2002 NCAA Championships at Athens, Ga., that concluded Saturday night. Texas won its third consecutive national title with 512 points, followed by Stanford (501), Auburn (365.5), Florida (277) and Southern
California (272).
Head coach John Trembley, who led the Vols to a third-place finish last year, knew this meet would be tough. "We knew coming in that we would be off the mark compared to last year, but I am very proud of George's swim tonight and of Brees' swim this morning. It shows that hard work pays off."
The Vols scored from sophomore Andrew Brees' sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and freshman George duRands' 12th-place swim in the 1650 freestyle in the final day of competition.
Bree earned his second All-America honor of the weekned and set a personal best time of 1:56.56 in the 200 breaststroke.
"Overall I am pleased with the way I swam," said Bree. "I learned some things and set a small personal best. Now I'm looking
forward and training for the Commonwealth Games in April."
DuRand also swam a personal best 15:09.75 in the1650 freestyle, earning honorable mention All-America honors. "This is
definitely different from anywhere I have swam before," duRand said of his trip to the NCAA Championships. "I enjoyed being here and I accomplished my goal of scoring."
Sophomore Evan Nylander "It was impressive to see this freshman
(duRand) step-up in the biggest meet of the year," said sophomore Evan Nylander. "It shows us a glimpse of his potential and the future of things to come here at Tennessee."
For the weekend, Tennessee captured 23 All-America honors and had 12 competitors in the championship finals and an additional 11 in the consolation finals.
