KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
After narrowly losing several races to Minnesota last week, head rowing coach Lisa Glenn made it her and the team's goal to further develop their speed and technique this week at practice. It all paid off on Saturday as the Lady Volunteer rowing team swept all four races from the Louisville Cardinals at the Lady Volunteer Boathouse, which coincidentally had the ground broken for it two and half years ago. This marks the second straight year that Louisville has come to Knoxville and returned home without a victory in any of the races.
"Today was a good day for the novice crews to work on their race plan and improve," head coach Lisa Glenn said. "It's good to see that they were able to enjoy a win. The varsity did what they needed to do and had a strong showing, but they know they have a lot of work to do. They had a strong race, but it wasn't their best."
Things got off to a good start in the Varsity 8+ race as the Tennessee crew of Erin Artz (coxswain), Kacey Montgomery, Kelly Kraiss, Kay Logan, Chelsea Pemberton, Lindsay Sagar, Katie Bargreen, Nicole Bold and Amy McIntosh glided home in first in a time of 6:19.9. Louisville finished in second in a time of 6:21.5 and they were followed by the Orange and White boat of Shannon McMahon, Davida Lopez, Sally BeVille, Ginny Bradley, Grace Harrington, Dana Forbes, Claire Newton, Mary Gruzalski and Mary Beth Lewis who finished third at a clip of 6:30.4.
First year novice coach Joe Bilyea picked up his first Tennessee dual regatta win when his crews captured the first two places in the Novice 8+ race. Jovanna Vick coxed her team of Heather Marshall, Marissa Allen, Holly McDaniel, Carol Wiegand, McKenzie Craig, Melissa DiCerbo, Katie Pelphrey and Hilary Gilmore across the finish line in first in a time of 7:14.07. The other Lady Vol crew of Kristin Clark, Elizabeth Hoffman, Tabatha Eaton, Andrea Bagwell, Maegan Speck, Elizabeth Freeman, Shaina Frank, Erin Pemberton and Denecia Brown were in second in 7:28.14. The Cardinals took third in 7:51.30.
The Varsity 4+ race saw Tennessee finish first again with Artz guiding her crew of Chelsea Pemberton, Logan, Bargreen and Bold past the finish line in 7:16.5. Louisville was a little over five seconds behind in second with 7:22.1. McMahon and her boat of Montgomery, Kraiss, Sagar and McIntosh placed third at a clip of 7:27.5.
The last race of the day was the Novice 4+ and coxswain Lizzie Brown picked up her third win in as many weeks as her shell consisting of Liz Humberd, Michelle Higdon, Claire Hennesy and Elizabeth Freeman won the race in a time of 7:46.1. The Cardinals' novice crew was second in 7:51.2. The all-Tennessee freshman team of Vick (cox.), Marshall, Allen, Craig and Wiegand captured third in 7:52.4
Tennessee is off next weekend and will resume competition on April 13th when they travel to Washington, D.C., for the George Washington Invitational.
