The University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team has earned distinction as an Academic All-America squad by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Lady Vols, under the guidance of head coach Dan Colella, boasted a team grade point average of 3.38 for the fall semester. That is the seventh-highest mark in the nation among Division I women's teams. The team GPA was also second the Southeastern Conference, trailing only Arkansas from the league.
Saint Francis University led the nation with a team GPA of 3.564 while Arkansas was second with a mark of 3.52. Xavier University (3.49), Georgetown University (3.424), LaSalle University (3.40), the University of Buffalo (3.393) and Purdue University (3.39) were the only other teams in the nation to rank ahead of the Lady Vols. The University of Illinois (3.372) and George Washington University (3.358) rounded out the top-10 programs.
The CSCAA Academic All-America honor is the second academic honor the Lady Vols have earned this spring. Earlier in the semester, 14 current and former Tennessee women's swimmers were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Last year, the UT women's team also earned the CSCAA honor for having a team grade point average of 3.11 for the spring semester. Individually, junior Sara Wingfield was named the edsouth Scholar-Athlete of the Year for sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA with a major in finance.
The Lady Vols will wrap up the 2001-02 season this weekend with the 2002 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Texas at Austin.
