TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
On Friday, the University of Tennessee women's track and field team will send 16 athletes onto Mike Long Track to compete in 13 events at the FSU Relays. Only two Lady Vols were in action on Thursday, however, as senior Diane Slinden (Menomonie, Wis.) and freshman Lindsey McFarland (Austin, Texas) participated in the gold division of the hammer throw.
Slinden managed a top throw of 147-10 to place 14th, while McFarland registered a mark of 109-11 to finish 20th in her first ever hammer competition. Candice Scott of Florida, the 2002 SEC and NCAA champion in the weight throw, took top honors in the hammer Thursday at Florida State, stretching the tape to 187-0.00.
McFarland, Denita Miller (Liberal, Kan.) and Janine Tessarzik (Altamont, N.Y.), in the garnet division of the discus, and Dee Dee Trotter (Decatur, Ga.), in the garnet long jump, will get Friday started for UT at 10 a.m. The day's final event for the Lady Vols is the 5000 meters at 7:10 p.m. Junior Sharon Dickie (Grand Blanc, Mich.) could make her season debut in that race, though a final decision has not been made.
