TENNESSEE SITS IN SECOND AFTER DAY OF THE DR. THOMPSON
March 20, 2002 | Women's Golf
March 20, 2002
Honolulu, Hawaii
For the fourth time in five days, the #4-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol golf team was out on the golf course playing another round of competitive golf. Four days ago, they started play in the Lady Gamecock Classic and after finishing a disappointing seventh on Sunday, they boarded a plane and flew to Hawaii to play in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Tournament. After taking Monday off, the Lady Vols hit the links to play 36 holes on the par 72, 5,829-yard Klipper Golf Course, giving them a total of 90 holes in five days. The jetlag seemed to hit the Orange and White during the first round as the team carded a 313, which put them in fourth. UT came back in the second round and fired a round-low 302, to give them a total of 615 and place them second. Oklahoma State leads the event with a 609.
Sophomore Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.), who is part Hawaiian, didn't let the time change affect her as she recorded rounds of 76 and 74 to finish with a day one total of 150. Perry is now in a three-way tie for first with Oklahoma State's Emma Zackrisson and TCU's D'Rae Ward. The 150 is also the lowest 36-hole total for Perry all year. Freshman Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ont.) is one stroke behind Perry in fourth place with a 151 (75-76). Senior All-American Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) got off to a rocky start by carding an 83, the highest round of her collegiate career, but she rebounded during the second round with a 74 and is tied for 15th with a 157. Senior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) continues to struggle as she notched rounds of 82 and 78 for a 160 and is tied for 25th. Sophomore Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) rounded out the fivesome with a 164 (80-84) and sits in 38th place. Sophomore Ryan Kirk is playing as an individual and carded rounds of 85 and 90 to finish tied for 65th with a 175.
The Orange and White will play in the third and final round of the event today and hope that the high winds that plagued play yesterday will be non-existent.
