The sixth-ranked Tennessee men's golf team will be competing in the Seminole Intercollegiate from March 11-12 at Golden Eagle Country Club (par 72, 6,965 yards) in Tallahassee, Fla. This marks the first time the Vols have competed in this tournament since the spring of 2000.
Tennessee is coming off a second-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Golf and Country Club. The Vols turned in scores of 307-290-277--874 to finish two strokes behind defending NCAA Champion Florida. Junior Ian Parnaby recorded his fourth top 10 finish of the year with a 76-71-69--216 to finish tied for sixth.
Head coach Jim Kelson sees this as an important opportunity for the Vols due to the fact that several district teams will be competing in this tournament.
"This is a pretty big tournament for us," Kelson said. "We will be facing teams from our district so it will be important for us to compete at a high level. This tournament will be played on a fabulous course with a strong field, so everyone will need to put forth a solid effort."
The field for the Seminole Intercollegiate includes three teams ranked in Golfweek's Top 25, including No. 6 Tennessee, No. 22 UAB and No. 23 North Florida. Other teams are North Carolina, College of Charleston, Central Florida, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Duke, South Carolina-Aiken, Kentucky and host school Florida State.
Tennessee's last appearance in this tournament saw the Vols shoot a 290-296-288--874 to finish tied for seventh. Then-senior Derrick Centers led the Vols with a third place finish with scores of 70-72-69--211.
