The Tennessee golf team, ranked eighth in the nation, is set to open the 2002 spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. The tournament will be held from Feb. 11-12 at Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club (par 72, 7,100 yards).
Head coach Jim Kelson is excited about the start of the spring portion of the schedule and looks for big things from his team.
"We are really looking forward to getting back out and playing," Kelson said. "We are playing in a new tournament and excited about the competition we will be facing."
The Vols will be competing against Air Force, Baylor, Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Texas, Southwest Texas State, UC-Davis and Vanderbilt. To compete against this field, Kelson will field a solid group of players. Leading the Vols will be freshman David Skinns. Skinns led the Vols in stroke average with a 70.67, and had three top 10 finishes this past fall. Junior Ian Parnaby will also be competing. Parnaby had a fall stroke average of 71.75, as well as two top 10 finishes. Seniors Andrew Black and Jimmy White and junior Andrew Pratt will also be competing for UT. Kelson feels very confident in his team and feels they will be competitive.
"I feel good about the quality of our team," Kelson said. It is important for us to get off to a strong start and continue the good play from this past fall."
Tennessee is coming off a successful fall, which saw its highest national ranking (second) in the program's history.
The Vols won their own Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at Cherokee Country Club, and also finished second at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate.
