February 25, 2002 | Women's Golf
Feb. 25, 2002
Tucson, Ariz.
Taking on a field that featured seven of the top 10 teams in the country, the Lady Vols struggled during the opening round of the 2002 Arizona Invitational. The Orange and White playing in its first tournament of the spring on the par 72, 6,134-yard The Raven at Sabino Springs golf course fired an opening round 299 and were unable to finish the second round due to darkness. As a result UT is in seventh place, five strokes behind the host Arizona Wildcats (294).
Senior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) proved that her playing in the number one spot was no fluke as she leads the Lady Vols with a career-low round of 3-under 69. She is now in fourth place trailing Golfer of the Year Lorena Ochoa of Arizona who carded a 67. Freshman Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) got her second semester off to a solid start with an opening-round score of 1-over 73 and is tied for eighth. Sophomore Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) continued to be a key contributor for UT as she recorded a 78, well enough for 54th place. Senior All-American Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) had a disappointing first day as she is tied for 58th with a 79. Sophomore Tai Perry's (Unionville, Pa.) score did not count against the team score as she shot a first-round 80 and finds herself tied for 67th. Senior Caroline Cole (Mansfield, Texas) is playing as an individual and is tied for 78th with an 82.
A majority of the Lady Vols have at least one hole left to play in the second round, which they will finish early Tuesday morning and then complete the remaining 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The Orange and White will look to rally and make a sudden ascent up the leaderboard over the final round.
The Wildcat Invitational is the first of seven tournaments in the spring for the Lady Vols and features many of the nation's top teams as Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Jose State, Southern Methodist, Southern Cal., Stanford, Texas, Tulsa, UCLA and Washington were all invited to attend.
