Tennessee (13-12) at Kentucky (17-7) Vols Play Second Consecutive Ranked Team On The Road | As a freshman, Brandon Crump is averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. | For the second road game in a row, the Tennessee Volunteers find themselves visiting a nationally-ranked foe. The Vols will try to sweep the season series from Kentucky for the first time since the 1999 season when the two teams meet at 9 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. The Vols won the first meeting between the two schools, a 76-74 overtime thriller in Knoxville less than two weeks ago. The win was the fourth for Tennessee's seniors over the Wildcats. Over the last four seasons, UT has won four of the seven meetings with Kentucky. That is one of Tennessee's most successful stretches since the early 1980s and late 1970s. The Kentucky game will mark the Vols' second consecutive road game against a ranked opponent. On Saturday, the Vols fell at No. 7 Alabama 82-95. Tennessee's final stretch won't get any easier after the Kentucky game. The Vols return home to play Vanderbilt before hitting the road to play nationally-ranked Florida. UT will complete its regular season schedule with a home game against a ranked Georgia team. Vincent Yarbrough, who is making a bid to become the first Vol since Allan Houston (22.3 points in 1993) to lead the SEC in scoring, currently leads the SEC with 18.1 points per game and leads the Vols with 7.2 rebounds per game. Marcus Haislip ranks second in the league with 2.00 blocked shots per game and is sixth in the SEC with 17.1 points and is eighth with 6.6 rebounds for the Vols. Tough Road Ahead Tennessee will finish its schedule by playing three of its last five games on the road. Each of those three games are against teams currently ranked in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll. The Vols began the stretch with an 82-95 loss at No. 7 Alabama on Feb. 16 before traveling to Lexington, Ky., this week to play the No. 10 Wildcats. UT also will visit No. 6 Florida on Feb. 26. Tennessee's two home games are Feb. 23 against Vanderbilt and March 2 against No. 21 Georgia. Vols Vying For Postseason Honors Three Vols are in contention to receive some postseason recognition. Vincent Yarbrough and Marcus Haislip are candidates for all-SEC honors in addition to possibly garnering some national recognition. His 38 blocks are the second-most in the league despite missing six of UT's games. Against ranked teams he has raised his game to average 22.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. . The Wildcats, who are one game ahead of Tennessee in the SEC Eastern Division standings, will play three of their final four regular season games at home before heading to the SEC Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. UK hosts Tennessee and Arkansas before traveling to Vanderbilt on Feb. 27. The Wildcats will close out their schedule with a March 2 game against Florida in Rupp Arena. . Senior forward Tayshaun Prince leads the Wildcats with 17.0 points and 6.1 rebounds this season. Junior guard Keith Bogans is the only other UK player in double-figure scoring with 11.8 points per game. . Tayshaun Prince is one of 20 finalists for the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award. He is the only player from the SEC on the list. . Last Meeting With Kentucky After losing seven straight close games to start the season, the Vols won their fourth game in a row decided by four points or less with a 76-74 overtime win against the seventh-ranked Kentucky Wildcats Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Vols had to hold their breath at the end though as Tayshaun Prince's shot at the buzzer missed. Tennessee students spilled out onto the court at the sound of the final horn. Thaydeus Holden gave the Vols a 70-64 lead with 30 seconds left in regulation but UK answered with a Gerald Fitch three-pointer to cut the lead to three with 17.4 seconds left. Holden drew a quick foul on UT's next possession but missed the front end of the 1-and-1. Kentucky grabbed the rebound and Fitch tied the game with another three-pointer with 2.0 seconds left. In the overtime period UT jumped out to a two-point lead but the Wildcats scored four straight points to take a 74-72 lead. Holden drew another foul and made both of his charity tosses to tie the score. After forcing a Kentucky turnover, Marcus Haislip scored the game-winning bucket when he followed his own miss for a tip-in with 18.3 seconds left. . Marcus Haislip recorded his first career double-double with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Haislip also tied his season-high with four blocked shots. . Vincent Yarbrough chipped in 19 points while Jenis Grindstaff and Thaydeus Holden each had 12 points. . The Vols were missing Ron Slay (out for the season with knee injury), Brandon Crump (missed the game with viral infection) and Jenis Grindstaff missed most of the second half with a knee injury. Buzz Peterson joined Ray Mears and Don DeVoe as the only Tennessee coaches to defeat Kentucky in their first game against the Wildcats. | Yarbrough and Haislip Earn NABC All-District Honors Vincent Yarbrough and Marcus Haislip were both named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Pontiac Division I All-District Teams on Tuesday afternoon. Yarbrough was a first team all-District 7 selection while Haislip was selected to the second team. The teams are selected by a panel of member coaches of the NABC. Yarbrough and Haislip, along with players from the other 15 districts, will now be eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-American Team that will be announced at the conclusion of the season. Yarbrough's Trifecta, Senior reaches 1,600 points / 800 Rebounds / 200 Steals Vincent Yarbrough reached three milestones in one game when he recorded his 1,600th career point, 800th career rebound and 200th career steal against Arkansas on Feb. 13. He joins Bernard King, Dyron Nix, Carl Widseth and Reggie Johnson as the only players in school history with 1,600 career points and 800 career rebounds. Yarbrough holds the school record with 201 career steals and ranks 10th on UT's career scoring list with 1,630 career points and is sixth with 808 career rebounds. Free Throws The Difference in SEC Play In Tennessee's Southeastern Conference wins this season, the Vols are shooting a combined 78.4 percent (109-of-139) from the free throw line. In UT's conference losses, the Vols are shooting just 59.4 percent (85-of-143) from the charity stripe. . Tennessee's 88.6 percent shooting against Ole Miss was its best effort at the free throw line since making 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) of its free throws against South Carolina on March 10, 2000. Vincent Yarbrough, Marcus Haislip and Jon Higgins are each averaging more than 30 minutes per game this year. Yarbrough leads UT with 35.2 minutes per game while Haislip (32.8 mpg) and Higgins (33.2 mpg) are also over the 30 minute mark. . Over the last six games, Yarbrough (38.2 mpg), Higgins (36.3 mpg) and Haislip (36.0 mpg) are each averaging more than 35 minutes per game. Haislip Leading The Vols In Blocks, 38 Blocks are Second-Most In SEC Marcus Haislip's 38 blocks this season are the second-highest number of blocked shots in the Southeastern Conference this year. Only Auburn's Kyle Davis (62) has more rejections this season. What's impressive with Haislip's numbers are that he has only played in 19 of UT's 25 games this year. Yarbrough won the award after averaging 22.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in Tennessee's wins at LSU and at Vanderbilt. He shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor, including 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from three-point range on the week. At LSU he had a game-high 21 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Once inserted into the lineup the 6-foot-2 senior made a statement. Over its last 19 games Tennessee has made just 31.4 percent (106-of-338) of its three-pointers. Georgia's Ezra Williams picked up a loose ball and fired up a three-pointer as time expired to give the Bulldogs a 73-70 win. . Mississippi State's Timmy Bowers hit one of two free throws with nine seconds left in overtime to give the Bulldogs a 92-91 win. Marcus Haislip's shot at the end of regulation was off the mark and then Jon Higgins' three-pointer at the end of the overtime also missed. . Vincent Yarbrough hit a driving shot with 4.3 seconds left to give Tennessee a 67-65 lead at Vanderbilt. Chuck Moore's three-pointer as time expired rimmed out to give the Vols the win. . Kentucky's Gerald Fitch hit a three-pointer with 2.0 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 70-70 and send it into overtime. Tennessee won the game 76-74 in the extra period. | Slay Out For The Year With Knee Injury Junior Ron Slay is out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee late in the first half of UT's win over eighth-ranked Syracuse Jan. 19. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Slay underwent successful surgery to repair his ACL on Thursday, Jan. 31, at the UT Medical Center. This year was an injury-plagued year for the Nashville native. He missed UT's first two games of the season and was limited through the Vols' first five games after suffering a stress fracture to the fibula in his right leg in October. . Slay averaged 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds before the injury. . He needs just 47 points to reach the 1,000 career point mark. He has scored 953 points in 80 career games. . He had led or tied for the team lead in rebounding in six of the eight games before the injury. . At the time of the injury his 32 offensive rebounds ranked second on the team. | Crump And Wilborn In For Slay With Ron Slay out with a knee injury, it is up to freshmen Brandon Crump and Elgrace Wilborn to step in for the junior. While filling in for Slay in the middle of the treacherous SEC schedule may be daunting for most freshmen, both Crump and Wilborn gained valuable experience for the Vols early in the season. . Crump started six of UT's first seven games while Marcus Haislip was out because of academics. During that time he averaged 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds in 26.6 minutes of action. . Wilborn started four of Tennessee's first five games for the injured Slay. In those first five games he averaged 5.4 points and 6.2 rebounds in 24.2 minutes of play. | Tennessee's Last Game Alabama used a 22-6 run midway through the second half and Tennessee could not recover in an 82-95 loss to the seventh-ranked Crimson Tide Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The Vols held the Tide scoreless in the second half until Demetrius Smith hit a three-pointer with 13:26 left. That started a run where Alabama hit eight of its next nine shots to give the Tide a 70-57 advantage with 9:30 remaining in the game. While Alabama was cold coming out of the locker room, missing its first 13 shots, Tennessee wasn't much better. The Vols managed to turn the Tide's 48-42 halftime lead into a 51-48 advantage. Following Bama's big run, UT could get no closer than nine points in the final 10 minutes. . Marcus Haislip led the Vols with a career-high 30 points. He also had career marks with 12 field goals made, four three-pointers made and five three-pointers attempted.
