SHANNAHAN NAMED EDSOUTH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Senior swimmer Monica Shannahan has been named the edsouth Lady Vol Athlete of the Month for January. During the month of January, Shannahan helped the Tennessee swimming and diving team with a total of five individual events victories over a span of two meets.
The San Diego, Calif., native started the month off strong as she won the 200y individual medley and 200y butterfly in Tennessee's double-dual meet against No. 3 Auburn and No. 16 Northwestern. In that meet, she was the only Lady Vol swimmer to notch an individual victory. Shannahan also recorded NCAA provisional times in the 200y butterfly and the 400y IM at that meet.
In UT's next action of the season, Shannahan helped Tennessee to a 163-137 victory over Arkansas as she won three individual events and helped a winning relay effort. Against the Lady'Backs, Shannahan won the 100y and 200y butterfly races as well as the 200y breaststroke. She was also a member of the victorious 200y medley relay team.
So far this season, Shannahan has recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in two events and currently ranks 19th in the nation in the 200y butterfly, according to the Swim World rankings. She was also a two-time recipient of the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week honor during January.
Shannahan and the rest of the Lady Vol swimming and diving team will wrap up the 2001-02 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 2, against Florida before competing at the SEC Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., during the week of Feb. 18-23.
