KEY WEST, Fla.
The University of Tennessee women's swim team received a break from a week of intense training in the Sunshine State with a competition at the Key West Relay Invitational on Dec. 18.
The event consisted of 12 relay events, most of which would not be swum in conventional meets, and featured teams from Florida State, Northwestern and Ohio State in addition to the Orange and White. Each event was scored with the first place team receiving 14 points, second place earning 10 points, eight for third and six for fourth. Florida State won the competition with a total of 154 points, followed by Northwestern in second with 128, the Big Orange third with 98 and Ohio State fourth with 76.
A highlight of the meet for Tennessee was the debut of Lady Vol freshman Tatiana Athayde (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who became eligible for competition after the completion of the fall semester. Athayde helped lead UT squads to third-place finishes in the 3x100y fly relay and 200y free relay as well as fourth place in the 4x100y IM relay.
In addition, the Lady Vols grabbed second place in three events. In the 3x100y back relay, the UT trio of freshmen Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Randi Vogel (Maineville, Ohio) along with junior Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa) placed second with a time of 2:57.31. The Tennessee freshmen quartet of Fessel, Danielle Lundy (Columbia, Md.), Noelle Bassi (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Betsy Brockman (Batavia, Ohio) finished runner up in the 400y medley relay. An Orange and White squad of freshman Kara Boland (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), senior Sara Wingfield (Fort Pierce, Fla), junior Kristin Souppa (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Bethany Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished second in the 4x100y fin kick.
After returning from winter training, the Tennessee swimmers' next competition will come in a double-dual meet on Jan. 11 against South Carolina and Penn State in Columbia, S.C. The UT divers, meanwhile, have two events before that dual with competitions at the Georgia Diving Invitational, Jan. 3-5 in Athens, Ga., and the America's Cup Diving Meet, Jan. 7-12 in Bloomington, Ind.
