KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Vol Ricky Busquets and Tennessee junior Andrew Bree swam abroad for their respective countries last month.
Busquets, a Puerto Rican native, garnered two gold medals at the 2002 Juegos Centroamericanos and Del Caribe in El Salvador. Busquets won the 50m free in a time of 22.55, setting a new European record. He also earned top honors in the 100 free with a time of 50.25. Busquets still holds UT's fastest times in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Bree finished just outside the medals Sunday in the mens' 200m breaststroke final at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Germany. Bree's time of 2:10.7 was good enough for fourth-place, only eight-hundredth's of a second away from a bronze medal (2:10.62). The Irishman's time was also half a second faster than his own previous national record.
The rest of the Volunteer squad is in Knoxville training for the upcoming spring season. The Vols travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina and Penn State in a double dual-meet Jan. 11, 2003.
