KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
University of Tennessee Lady Vol junior guard Tasha Butts has been chosen at the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week, for the period ending Dec. 10, by a vote of the media relations staff.
In #4/5 UT's important road victory over the previously #13/15 Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, the Milledgeville, Ga., native made the most of her second start of the season. She bucketed 12 points, pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, dished out two assists and pilfered a steal in 26 minutes on the hardwood. Butts started in place of sophomore Brittany Jackson, who suffered a tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her left knee at the San Juan Shootout against Saint Louis and was forced to sit out. With the win, Tennessee improved its overall record to 6-1.
The 5'11" Butts has put up some impressive numbers this season despite averaging only 14.9 minutes per contest. She currently ranks fourth on the squad in scoring with 8.0 points per game and is tied for third on the Orange and White in rebounding average with sophomore forward Shyra Ely at 4.7 rebounds per game. She has hit 20-of-25 (.800) tosses from the free-throw line and distributed 15 assists.
Next up for the #4/5 Lady Vols (6-1) is a Dec. 14 matchup with the Southern California Women of Troy (4-3) in Los Angeles, Calif., at 4:30 p.m. EST, before returning home to face the #5/4 Stanford Cardinal on Dec. 18, at 7:00 p.m. EST, at the Thompson-Boling Arena.
