EA Sports vs. Tennessee
November 8, 2002
TENNESSEE HEAD COACH BUZZ PETERSON
"The game gave us some good situations. With three minutes to go, it was tight, so our play through that period was a good experience. We've got a lot of work to do, and one thing we need to do is get tougher, the way Ron Slay is tough.
"On the bright side, we competed, and really got after them offensively. We need to be more sound, but this is a team that wants to get better. They know their roles.
"EA Sports is a real crafty team, with some guys who were able to sneak past us and go to the basket. Andy Ikeakor came in and did a good job in the post. C.J. Watson outran everybody, so our wings need to do a better job of getting down there with him. One problem I have with us is that I felt we took too many quick shots when EA Sports went into a zone.
"We pressed some tonight. When we have our quick lineup in there; we'll probably do that all season. We decided to rest Wilborn tonight; we didn't want to risk him in an exhibition game."
EA SPORTS HEAD COACH PHIL BRYANT
"It wasn't a good effort on our part, the worst of our five games so far. There was not really any intensity or movement, even though we've had a day's rest.
"We didn't play as well as we could. The opponent always has something to do with that. We're everybody's home opener and there is some intensity attached to that. Slay is a load. We had two guys shoot 0-for-12, and were 1-for-9 on follow-up tips.
"It was fun being at Tennessee. I hope we helped them. It was good to see C.J Watson; he played in our travel team with five or six guys last year who signed with Division I teams. It was fun to watch Slay operate; he's a big-time player and a quality young man. I liked the way he plays. It's a tribute to Buzz. Slay knows how to get open and score.
"We need to get a win. We play seven of the Top 25 teams; it's a tough schedule. We play Pittsburgh, and then Florida."
