KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
After a weekend in which she placed first on the one-meter and fourth on the three-meter springboard at the Minnesota Invitational, senior Jaime Sanger earned the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week honor in a vote by the media relations staff on Tuesday. By receiving the distinction, Sanger edged out senior Sharon Dickie (Grand Blanc, Mich.) of the cross country team, freshman volleyball player Jasmine Fullove (Fort Wayne, Ind.), senior forward Gwen Jackson (Eufaula, Ala.) of the basketball team and senior midfielder Tara Minnax (Tampa, Fla.) of the soccer team.
Sanger, a native of Plymouth, Minn., returned to the Land of 10,000 Lakes in triumphant fashion by claiming victory in the one-meter springboard competition on Friday. On the one-meter, she registered a score of 297.75, the best by a Lady Vol this season.
Sanger followed up that performance the next day by earning fourth place in the three-meter springboard and recording an 11-dive total of 510.25 points. That score is the best three-meter total of Sanger's career and currently ranks her sixth on Tennessee's all-time list for the event.
These performances by Sanger came against solid competition, as over 40 divers participated in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Making Sanger's effort even more impressive is the fact that the Minnesota Invite was only her second competition of the season following a return from injury.
The next major competition for Sanger and the rest of the Lady Vol divers will come at the Georgia Diving Invitational, Jan. 3-5 at Athens, Ga., followed closely by the America's Cup Diving Meet, Jan. 7-12 at Bloomington, Ind.
