LADY VOL GOLFERS STRUGGLE IN FIRST DAY AT MERCEDES-BENZ

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
No. 6 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad opened up the 2002 Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club with a first-day 319 total that left them in 11th-place after one round of competition. The Swedish Junior National team leads the team event with a 300, while North Carolina's Ashley Prange is in the individual lead after shooting an even-par 72.
"Golda played hard the whole day and I'm very proud of her effort." Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "It's good to know that we can rely on her for a good score, even when she's not playing her best."
Individually, Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) paced the UT links effort with a 2-over 74, which broke her previous career-high of 75 set three times this season and moved her into a fifth-place tie. Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) fired a 6-over 78 to finish tied for 27th. Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and Ryan Kirk (Hixson, Tenn.) rounded out the Lady Vol showing with rounds of 83 and 84 to place tied for 57th and 67th, respectively. Junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) shot a 4-over 76 but was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
"I'm disappointed that I didn't play even better than I did." Johansson said. "I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament because I'm hitting the ball well."
The Lady Vol golf squad continues the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championships Saturday at 10:20 a.m. UT then closes out its home tourney Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
