KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Junior All-American diver Jaime Sanger has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff for the period ending on Jan. 6.
Sanger earns the honor after a successful weekend at the Georgia Diving Invitational. Against a tough field comprised of Southeastern Conference and national talent, Sanger won the one-meter springboard competition with a score of 302.40, which is one of the ten best scores for six dives in Tennessee history. After taking her one-meter victory, the Plymouth, Minn., native then won the one-meter shootout competition, a battle in which the top six divers at the Georgia Invitational competed in a format where the lowest score in each of six rounds is eliminated. Sanger was the last diver standing on that evening and the consistency paid off, as she finished second on the three-meter the next day with a score of 470.70, moving up from third in the preliminaries.
Sanger is the first member of the swimming and diving team to earn athlete of the week honors for the 2001-02 school year and her win breaks a streak of five straight honors for members of the Lady Vol basketball team.
Other nominees for the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week award were junior Christie Elwin, a member of the track and field team who won the pole vault competition in her first meet of the season while also earning an NCAA provisional qualifying score, and junior Kara Lawson, a member of the UT basketball team who averaged 14.5 points per game in a pair of contests against ranked teams last week.
