KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Senior Monica Shannahan, a member of the University of Tennessee women's swimming and diving team, has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week by a vote of the media relations staff for the period ending on Jan. 27. The honor is Shannahan's second in the last three weeks.
The San Diego, Calif., native was selected as the top Lady Vol for last week after winning three individual events in Tennessee's dual meet victory over Arkansas. Competing at home for the first time since Oct. 19, 2001, the Lady Vols handed the Lady'Backs a 163-137 defeat while winning seven events.
Shannahan played no small part in the team victory as she recorded wins in three individual events and contributed a leg of UT's winning 200y medley relay team. The senior won the 100y and 200y butterfly events as well as the 200y breaststroke to help give the Lady Vols the edge. She also recorded her third NCAA provisional time of the season in the 200y breaststroke.
Other nominees for the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week honor were Kameisha Bennett (track and field), Vilmarie Castelvi (tennis) and Kara Lawson (basketball).
