The University of Tennessee women's diving team will kick off the new year with its first competition of 2002 with the Georgia Diving Invitational over the weekend of Jan. 4-6 at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
The meet is slated for one-meter competition on Friday, followed by the three-meter on Saturday and platform on Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, the action will be divided into morning preliminaries at 11 a.m. and evening finals at 6 p.m. Sunday's platform competition will begin at 11 a.m. and will consist of finals only.
The Lady Vol divers are coming off of a strong fall season that saw the UT quartet combine for seven individual victories. Junior All-American Jaime Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.) won the one-meter competition at the Indiana Invitational while also finishing first in the three-meter events against South Carolina and versus LSU and Kentucky. Freshman Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) also earned a victory in Indiana as she took the three-meter crown after capturing wins on the one-meter against South Carolina and in the double dual versus LSU and Kentucky.
Sophomore All-American Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) had a pair of second-place finishes on the platform at the Indiana and Arkansas Invitationals in the team's first two tower outings of the season. Junior Stacy Binyon (Southlake, Texas) came on strong at the end of the fall with a third-place performance on the tower at Indiana and then followed that up with a fourth-place finish in Arkansas.
Following the Georgia Invitational, the Lady Vols will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they join forces with the swimmers to travel to Auburn, Ala., to take on No. 3 Auburn and No. 16 Northwestern.
