TONIGHT'S GAME
The #2/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols travel into dangerous territory taking on the best team in the SEC, the #8-ranked South Carolina Lady Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. The Carolina Coliseum was sold-out by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, as the Lady Gamecock fans hope their team can continue on its 12-game winning streak.
IN OUR LAST GAME
The #2/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers faced an undermanned Louisiana State Lady Tiger team on Jan. 13 and had to fight for a 79-67 victory in Knoxville. The win upped UT's SEC home court winning streak to 35 consecutive games dating back to 1996. LSU had just dropped out of the top 25 polls during the week and looked like a team on a mission as they rolled into Knoxville, just eight players strong. The game see-sawed through the opening eight minutes before LSU pulled ahead. With 9:42 showing in the first half, the Lady Tigers held a seven-point lead, 15-8. UT then subbed reserve senior post Shalon Pillow who helped turn the first half around for the Lady Vols. In a three-minute stretch, Pillow scored eight points and UT led 26-23 with 4:30 to play. LSU went on a mini-run and led by five, 31-26, before a one-minute five-point scoring spree by rookie Brittany Jackson found the Lady Vols tied at 33-all at the half. LSU outrebounded UT in the first half, 21-18, grabbing seven offensive boards - much to the displeasure of the Lady Vol coach. In the second half, UT could not shake LSU. Tennessee led by four (41-37 at 18:07 and 60-56 at 11:01) and LSU would come right back. The Lady Tigers held a 63-62 lead with 7:54 showing before UT buckled down. UT Junior Gwen Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 6:10 left to put the Lady Vols ahead for good, 64-63. LSU closed to within 70-67 with 3:43 remaining before UT shut the door and outscored the Lady Tigers 9-0 to take the win. On the afternoon, four Lady Vols were in double-figures led by Kara Lawson's 17 points (15 in the second half). Also in extra digits were Michelle Snow with 14 points, and Shyra Ely and Ashley Robinson with 10 each. Jackson, Ely and Lawson all grabbed seven rebounds apiece. UT connected on just 42% of their field goals (for the third consecutive game), 27% three-pointers and 77% from the charity stripe. Tennessee controlled the boards with a 45-31 advantage and did not allow LSU an offensive board in the second half. UT committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 19 miscues on 13 UT thefts.
ALL-CONFERENCE
This season, Tennessee will take on teams from 11 different conferences.
LADY VOLS ON TELEVISION
Seventeen Lady Vol regular season games will be on television this year. UT is 9-1 thus far on TV. Upcoming games on TV include South Carolina (CSS) and Florida (FOX Sports).
ON THIS DAY
On Jan. 17th, the Lady Vols have produced a 10-4 record all-time. The Lady Vols are 5-0 at home, 5-4 away and have a 0-0 slate at neutral sites. UT's most recent game on this day was in 2000 when Georgia throttled UT on ESPN, 78-51, in Athens, Ga. It was the worst SEC beating ever and the second-worst overall in school history behind Texas' 31-point win in 1987.
LOOKING BACK
Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 16-1 overall, 4-0 in the SEC and had just defeated Mississippi State, 66-59, in Knoxville.
OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK
The Tennessee Lady Vols head back to the road after enjoying a four-game stretch at home (four games in eight days). Tennessee hits the road tonight traveling to red hot, SEC leader, #8-ranked South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., in a game televised by Comcast. UT returns home for a Sunday, Jan. 20 meeting with Alabama in Thompson-Boling Arena.
ADVANCE SELL-OUT AT CAROLINA
The #8-ranked South Carolina women's basketball team has recorded their first pre-game sell-out in school history and will break the all-time Carolina Coliseum women's basketball attendance record when the Lady Vols roll into town. The previous Coliseum record was set on January 15, 1981 when 6,219 fans attended the South Carolina-UCLA contest. All tickets for Thursday's game were only $1 and fans snapped up all of the ducats by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15. Previously, the all-time largest crowd at Carolina for the Tennessee vs. USC game was 5,000 on Jan. 23, 1980, when the eighth-ranked Lady Gamecocks prevailed 56-52 over the fourth-ranked Lady Vols.
SELL-OUT CITY -- IT MUST BE THE ORANGE
Another school has joined the ranks of producing a sold-out arena when the Lady Vols came to call during the 2001-02 season as South Carolina announced an advance sell-out (12,401) on Jan. 15 for its Jan. 17 game with the Lady Vols. Earlier this season, the game with DePaul attracted an over-capacity crowd of 3,025. Prior to that, Stanford made the announcement on Monday, Dec. 10 (six days before tip-off) that the game with Tennessee was an advance sell-out (7,391). UT's game with George Washington (Nov. 27) was also an advance sell-out (5,252) while the Lady Vols and UT-Chattanooga attracted the largest crowd ever to watch the Mocs play, 9,113. And of course, the Tennessee vs. Connecticut game in Knoxville attracted the largest crowd in collegiate women's basketball history with 24,611 in attendance. The game was also an advance sell-out.
UT VS. USC CROWD HISTORY
Of the 31 games played all-time between UT and USC, there are 28 games (beginning with 1979) where attendance records were kept. Thirteen games have been played in Knoxville with an average attendance of 5,971. However, the last three games have attracted crowds over 10,000 fans with the Jan. 11, 2001 game drawing 17,077. In Columbia, 12 games have been played all-time with an average attendance of 2,017. The most spectators ever in Columbia (5,000) saw the Lady Gamecocks defeat the Lady Vols, 56-52, on Jan. 23, 1980. On neutral courts, the teams average 3,318 for the three games played.
ICE CAPADES
The Tennessee Lady Vols have compiled a 17-7 all-time record when they play over ice. In Thursday's tilt at South Carolina, the Carolina Coliseum now includes ice for hockey as the Columbia Inferno of the East Coast Hockey League plays their home games at the Coliseum. This season, UT is 2-0 over ice having collected wins at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., home to the NHL's Thrashers, and the Conte Forum at Boston College, home of the reigning NCAA hockey champs - the BC Eagles.

THE USC SERIES
Tennessee leads the series with South Carolina, 29-2. The UT Media Relations Office recognizes all recorded games played with newspaper accounts and/or box scores. The series with USC indicates a win and a loss pre-dating the Pat Summitt years yielding a 29-2 record. The Summitt era has only found UT on the losing end to the Lady Gamecocks once -- Jan. 23, 1980 in Columbia, 56-52. It happened when the Carolina Pep Band positioned itself behind the UT bench and played its amplified drums, electric guitars, etc. for all 40 minutes of the game. UT huddles, held practically at the free throw line, did little good. Shortly thereafter, a ban on bands playing during the game and disallowing electronic amplification, was instituted by the AIAW.
HEADING INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA CONTEST...
UT and USC meet tonight for the 32nd time in the series. The Lady Vols have recorded 25 consecutive victories over the Lady Gamecocks dating back to the 1979-80 season when UT assistant coach Holly Warlick was the starting Tennessee point guard.
ABOUT THE 1980 LOSS
Coach Pat Head (Summitt) was none to pleased that her team lost, 56-52. The next day, the team practiced in their stinky orange game uniforms in Stokely Athletics Center. Unwittingly, a few surprised folks passing by the gym asked the players if they had a game that night.
GAME REPORT 16 - SOUTH CAROLINA
The upset-minded eighth-ranked South Carolina Lady Gamecocks hope to add to their 12-game winning streak as the Tennessee Lady Vols come to town. USC has a 4-0 SEC record and has registered huge wins over #6/5 Vanderbilt, 71-52, and at #15/8 Georgia, 71-64. Junior forward Jocelyn Penn leads USC with 17.8 ppg and tossed in 32 points against Arkansas in her last outing.

LAST TIME VERSUS SOUTH CAROLINA
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers needed a break-out game and they got just that with a 99-45 pasting of South Carolina on Jan. 11, 2001, in Knoxville. Former Lady Vol Teresa Geter, now a Lady Gamecock, had her homecoming spoiled by former classmate Semeka Randall. The slumping Randall hit everything she tossed up at the basket in the first half. Randall hit jumpers, lay-ups and scoop shots en route to 14 of UT's first 24 points as the Lady Vols led, 24-8 at the 12:46 mark. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, it was Randall 22, South Carolina 15. UT's 39-point lead at the break, 54-15, was the largest of the season. Randall, who entered the game hitting 36% from the field, connected on 72% (10-14) of her first half shots. In the second stanza, UT continued to pour it on even after Randall took a seat for good playing just six minutes after registering a career high 28 points (13-19 FG - 68%), seven rebounds and three assists. The Lady Vols kept their lead in the 50-point range (78-25 with 9:53 left) before hanging a 54-point defeat on USC. On the evening, four UT players reached double-figure scoring led by Randall's 28 points. Also in double-digits were Tamika Catchings with 16 points, Ashley Robinson with a 13 points, and Michelle Snow with 10. Snow recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. Catchings notched a season high four blocked shots while dishing out four assists and grabbing three steals - in the all-around category. In her return visit to Knoxville, Lady Gamecock Geter tallied just four points and four blocked shots in 27 minutes. UT connected on 52% FG and was 47% from three-point land (9-19). The Lady Vols outrebounded USC, 52-31. UT registered a then-season low 10 turnovers while forcing 22 miscues for USC off of 11 steals.
UT & USC RANKING OUR OPPONENTS IN 2001-02
The #2/3 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols have faced nine ranked teams in 15 games (60% of its opponents) while South Carolina has taken on four ranked teams in 17 games (23% of its opponents). After the USC game, UT will see six more ranked teams.

|
AP POLL NOTES
The Associated Press women's Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Tennessee Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 292 consecutive polls and since the 1986-87 season, the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 26 years in the AP poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history.
AVERAGE SCORE
The average score of all UT-USC games is 76.1 (UT) and 59.7 (USC).
UT CAREER STATS VS. USC
Returning Lady Vol career statistics versus South Carolina can be found on p. 136 in the 2001-02 Tennessee media guide. Senior center Michelle Snow leads the Lady Vols against South Carolina with 13.7 ppg in three meetings. Also in double-figures are Ashley Robinson (13.0 ppg) and Kara Lawson (12.5). Snow averages 8.0 rebounds per game versus Carolina.
GOING TO MS. GETER'S
Former Lady Vol center Teresa "Tree" Geter (1997-99) transferred to the University of South Carolina in August 1999 citing the fact that she wanted to be closer to home (Columbia, S.C.). As a rookie on the 1998 NCAA title team, Geter broke the UT school record for blocks in a single season with 93. Geter is 0-1 versus her former teammates.
IN COMMON
Outside of the SEC play, Tennessee and South Carolina share Duke as a common opponent this season. UT defeated the #9-ranked Blue Devils, 89-68 on a neutral court, while South Carolina won in overtime at #9/7 Duke, 87-81.
LONGEST STREAK
The win over South Carolina last year in Knoxville extended Tennessee's streak over the Lady Gamecocks to 25 games. It's the longest winning streak UT has over an opponent. Lady Vol senior Amanda Canon was the only Lady Vol born (12-8-79) the last time South Carolina defeated the Lady Vols (1-23-80).
TRIBUTE TO DAVE THOMAS
Clara, of Wendy's hamburger commercial fame, barked out "Where's the Beef?" Recently, UT coach Pat Summitt has been barking, "where's the offense?" In the last four games (beginning with the loss to Connecticut), the Lady Vols have scored in the 70's - averaging 74.0 ppg -- about 16 points below their average before the skid. Entering the game with top-ranked Connecticut on Jan. 5, the Lady Vols had been averaging 90.7 ppg while giving up 63.9 ppg. The team was shooting .478 from the field, .687 from the free throw line and .385 from the three-point arc. Since the loss to UConn, the Lady Vols are now shooting .458 FG, .372 3FG but are up to .711 on free throws. UT averages 84.1 ppg while giving up 64.5 ppg.
LADY VOLS TOP THE RPI
The latest WBCA/Summerville RPI has the Lady Vols on top with an RPI of .729. Following Tennessee is: 2. South Carolina (.684), 3. Oklahoma (.681), 4. Connecticut (.679), and 5. Wisconsin (.678). The other SEC schools rank: 9. Vanderbilt .664, 18. Georgia .620, 19. Florida .619, 23. Auburn .614, 31. Miss. State .598, 32. LSU .597, 54. Arkansas .576, 64. Ole Miss .563, 68. Alabama .558, 81. Kentucky .549.
LADY VOLS HAVE THE NATION'S BEST SCHEDULE
The latest WBCA/Summerville Strength of Schedule rating has the Lady Vols on top with an SS score of .706. The top five also includes: 2. Rutgers .661, 3. Texas Tech .654, 4. Colorado .643 and 5. N. .616. The number one ranked Connecticut Huskies are 57th in schedule strength with a .572 score. South Carolina, tonight's opponent, has a strength of schedule rating of 16.
THE ANNUAL ATTENDANCE CHALLENGE
The Lady Vols have picked right up where they left off the last couple of seasons leading the nation in women's basketball attendance. This week (as of Jan. 14), UT is in first place averaging 14,867 while Texas Tech is in second place with 13,446. Rounding out the top five are: 3. Connecticut 12,437, 4. Iowa State 9,703 and 5. New Mexico 8,653. The crowd of 24,611 at the Tennessee-Connecticut game on Jan. 5, 2002, broke the women's basketball collegiate record for largest attendance. The previous record was 24,597 set on Jan. 3, 1998, when UT defeated UConn, 84-69, in Knoxville.
ADD FLORIDA TO THE TV SCHEDULE
The Tennessee versus Florida match-up from Knoxville on Jan. 31, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. will be televised on FOX Sports Net South.
JUST ONE MORE NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENT
The Feb. 12th game with #12 Texas is Tennessee's final non-conference game of the season. The Lady Vols have compiled an 11-1 record this season over non-conference foes. With the exception of the game with Texas, the Lady Vols will be on a steady diet of Southeastern Conference games leading up to the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 28-Mar. 3.
GOT THE SMARTS
Four Lady Vols earned Dean's List honors in the 2001 Fall semester: Amanda Canon - 3.19 - Nursing, Kara Lawson - 3.54 - Finance, Courtney McDaniel - 3.38 - Psychology and April McDivitt - 3.13 - Education.
UT'S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM...?
When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
35 CONSECUTIVE SEC WINS
The Tennessee Lady Vols, the 2001 Southeastern Conference Champs with a perfect 14-0 record, opened 2002 SEC play with an 88-64 win at Florida on Jan. 3. UT now has a 15-game SEC road-winning streak. The last time UT lost an SEC road game was to Georgia, 78-51, on Jan. 17, 2000. With the victory over LSU, Tennessee currently has won 35 consecutive SEC games at home. The last SEC loss at home was to Georgia on Dec. 8, 1996, 94-93 (OT).
SUMMITT CLASSIFIEDS-- STARTERS WANTED
Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt has been mixing the line-up of late after indicating that she might not stick with the veteran line-up she has employed the last few games. Sophomore Tasha Butts and junior Kara Lawson are in the backcourt, senior Michelle Snow is at center and rookie Shyra Ely and junior Gwen Jackson are at the forward slots. Summitt has started six different line-ups in the 15 games played thus far.
IT'S VUJA DE
Last year, the Lady Vols were rolling along with an 11-0 overall record before the #1 Connecticut Huskies dropped the Lady Vols, 81-76, on Dec. 30, 2000 in Hartford, Conn. This year, Tennessee was also 11-0 before facing the Huskies on Jan. 5, 2002 and suffering an 86-72 setback. Better check the schedule next year before penciling in the Huskies in the 12th game of the season.
86 POINTS --- WOW
When Connecticut lit-up the scoreboard for 86 points against Tennessee on Jan. 5. 2002, it didn't make the Lady Vol top 10 list for most points scored by an opponent. However, it stacks right up there with the most points scored on a Lady Vol team in recent years. Last season, Connecticut tallied 88 points versus Tennessee in Knoxville on Feb. 1, 2001. However, the Lady Vols scored 92 points to win that contest. On Mar. 1, 1997, LSU rang-up 99 points on the Lady Vols in the SEC Tournament. Alas, Tennessee scored 100 points to claim an overtime victory. The last time a team scored at least 86 points and defeated UT was on Feb. 24, 1997 when Louisiana Tech burned UT for 98 points in a 98-80 romp in Ruston.
LSU WAS WIN #773
The victory over Auburn was Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt's 773rd of her 28-year career. Now with 773 wins, she currently ranks eighth among all coaches (men's or women's) in all-time victories. She is just ahead of Lefty Driesell and Jerry Tarkanian. The only woman Summitt trails behind is Jody Conradt of the University of Texas who started this season in her 33rd year of coaching with 766 wins. Conradt is off to an 11-2 start on the year and currently has 777 victories.

GOT OUR 300TH VICTORY AGAINST A RANKED TEAM
The Tennessee Lady Vols recorded their 300th all-time win versus a ranked team with the victory over fifth-ranked Louisiana Tech, 90-75, on Nov. 23, 2001. The Lady Vols now stand 307-125 (.710) overall against ranked foes since the polls began in 1976.
STOP THIEF
Kara Lawson eclipsed 100 career thefts against Florida.
BEST SHOOTERS VS. UT
Connecticut holds the distinction of having the best field goal percentage against the Lady Vols this season connecting on 57% of their shots.
GOT A LITTLE ROAD STREAK
The last time UT lost a regular season game on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 24 consecutive road games.
WOW, THE LADY VOLS AT FULL-STRENGTH
The contest versus Duke in the ACC/SEC Shootout marked the first time in the 2001-02 season that the Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team was at full-strength. The game against #15/16 Florida was the first time that the entire 14-woman roster was employed in a game. Thirteen players scored in the win.
"THE BIG CITIES TOUR"
The Tennessee Lady Vols were on the road for eight consecutive games and 43 days traveling to Washington, D.C., Orlando, Chestnut Hill, Mass., Palo Alto, Calif., Chicago, Atlanta, Memphis and Gainesville, Fla., before finally returning home on Jan. 5, 2002, to face top-ranked Connecticut in Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee began its month of traveling on the "Big Cities Tour" at the end of November. UT first visited Washington, D.C., where the Lady Vols defeated #21/20 George Washington Univ., 88-57, in a sold-out Charles E. Smith Center on Nov. 27. Tennessee returned home briefly before traveling to Orlando, Fla., for the Honda Elite Four on Dec. 2 at Disney World and hung a 93-56 loss on the #8/9 N.C. State Wolfpack on ESPN. UT then traveled "back east" for a hard-fought 75-66 victory over BIG EAST foe Boston College. After an 11-day break for final exams, the Lady Vols pulled out a big win at #6/5 Stanford, 68-62, in front of a sold-out Maples Pavilion crowd. A sold-out house in Chicago saw the Lady Vols defeat DePaul, 80-66 on stop number five on Dec. 19. On Dec. 27, the Lady Vols faced rival #9 Duke in the ACC/SEC Shootout in the Philips Arena in Atlanta and came away with an impressive 89-68 victory despite 26 miscues. Stop number seven found UT in Memphis where the Lady Vols dropped the University of Memphis, 92-66. The final game of the road trip was the SEC opener in Gainesville that resulted in an 88-64 win over the #15/16 Florida Lady Gators. Tennessee finished with a 8-0 record on the "Big Cities Tour."
JANUARY SUCCESS
The Tennessee Lady Vols have enjoyed a great deal of success in the month of January over the years. UT has produced a 217-44 all-time record during the first and busiest month of the year. The Lady Vols are 118-12 at home, 95-31 away and 4-1 at neutral sites.
JUST THE FIFTH TIME
The Lady Vols entered the January portion of their schedule undefeated for only the fifth time in Coach Pat Summitt's 28-years at the helm. With the victory over Memphis on Dec. 29, UT had a 10-0 record. The last time a Lady Vol team began January undefeated was the perfect 1997-98 season when the team went 39-0.
LOTS 'O RANKED TEAMS IN JANUARY
In the month of January, the Lady Vols will face a stretch of eight ranked opponents out of nine games. LSU and Alabama are the only teams on the schedule in January who currently are not ranked. LSU has been ranked all season but fell out of the polls on Jan. 7.
THE CHALLENGE
The Lady Vols participated in their "first challenge" format with the ACC and recorded an 89-68 win over Duke. Previously, the Lady Vols had appeared as a part of the SEC/Big 10 Challenge. The Lady Vols won games versus Illinois and Purdue in those Challenges.
WELCOME BACK ASHLEY
UT sophomore center Ashley Robinson appeared on the court for the first time this season in the game against DePaul. In 13 minutes of action, she scored eight points, grabbed a rebound and dished out an assist. She did not post a turnover. Robinson suffered a torn ACL on June 30, 2001, and had reconstructive surgery on July 12, 2001.
CONGRATS K-LAW
Junior guard Kara Lawson joined the Lady Vol 1,000 career point club when she hit a lay-up with 5:15 to go in UT's game at DePaul on Dec. 19. Lawson becomes the 26th member of the Lady Vols' 1000-point club.
THE IRON PILLS MUST HAVE WORKED
Prior to UT's win at DePaul, the Lady Vols rebounding had been extremely anemic but particularly so on the offensive end. UT was out-rebounded by both Boston College (37-35) and Stanford (42-33) and managed a scant total of just 15 offensive rebounds out of their 72 missed shots in both games (just 19%). Against DePaul, things picked up as UT ruled the boards, 50-36 and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. In the Lady Vols most recent games versus Duke and Memphis, the team collected a total of 33 offensive boards.
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
When the action down the stretch got tight at both Stanford and Boston College, the Lady Vols finally showed some spunk at the free throw line canning 19-27 (71%) against Stanford and 20-23 tosses (.870) versus Boston College. Tennessee has been plagued by charity stripe defense intermittently during the early going - 15 misses against George Washington, 11 vs. Southern Cal, 10 each against Louisiana Tech and N.C. State.
PRESTO-CHANGE-O
Lady Vol fans might be confused when they see #43 step onto the court this season. Sophomore Ashley Robinson is #43, right? Well, Robinson was #43 as a rookie but switched to her favorite number, 33, after Kristen "Ace" Clement graduated last season. Rookie Shyra Ely will don number 43 this season.
ROOKIES REPRESENT
Freshman forward Shyra Ely was joined in the starting line-up for the Boston College game by fellow rookie, Loree Moore who started at point guard.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Junior forward Gwen Jackson turned in the first Lady Vol double-double of the season with a 14-point and 12-rebound performance against #8/9 N.C. State. Fellow junior Kara Lawson followed up with one of her own versus DePaul tossing in 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds (career high) for her first career double-double. Against Duke, two players doubled-up with Jackson recording a 20-point and 10-rebound night while rookie Shyra Ely turned in an 11-point and 10-rebound outing.
BENCH INTENSITY
UT's bench did not find a match in the N.C. State reserves. UT's bench accounted for 35 points, 12 assists and 14 steals while the NCSU subs added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 12 miscues.
ELITE COMPANY
When Pat Summitt started freshman forward Shyra Ely against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 16, 2001, it marked only the ninth time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Semeka Randall 1997, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.
154 WINS IN OUR LAST 165 GAMES

UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in 1997-98, turned in a 31-3 worksheet in 1998-99, a 33-4 mark during the 1999-2000 season, a 31-3 mark last season and an 14-1 mark in 2001-02.
LADY VOL STREAKS
The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Connecticut, 86-72, on Jan. 5, 2002 -- since then, the team has won three games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 23 consecutive road games. WHO'S THAT LADY (VOL)?
The thousands of Lady Vol fans who were in attendance at The McKenzie Arena on Nov. 16th - opening night of the 2001-02 season - in Chattanooga, witnessed the debut of another outstanding Tennessee rookie class. Shyra Ely became a rare Lady Vol rookie starter playing in place of injured junior Gwen Jackson - Ely scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed six offensive boards. Point guard Loree Moore logged 24 minutes and added 15 points and snagged five steals. Forward Michelle Munoz calmly nailed a trey for her first bucket and finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Finally, Brittany Jackson scored seven points to go along with three steals. In all, the rookie crew was responsible for 51 of UT's 97 points and 20 of the Lady Vols' 54 rebounds.
THE POLLING PLACE
In the first Associated Press and USA TODAY/ESPN polls of the year on Nov. 5, the Tennessee Lady Vols began the 2001-02 season as the number three (AP) and number two (USA TODAY/ESPN) ranked team in the country.
