The fourth-ranked University of Tennessee men's swimming and diving team remain undefeated by downing 11th-ranked Virginia 143-98 in a dual meet Friday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.
Tennessee, now 9-0 on the season, controlled the meet by winning 10 out of the 13 events. The Vol winners included, Brett Tannhauser (200 Free, 500 Free), Andrew Bree (200 Breast, 200 I.M.), George du Rand (1000 Free.), Renato Gueraldi (50 Free) and Paulo Machado (200 Back). The 400 medley relay of Machado, Stewart, Hoggat and Parrish also grabbed a win for the Vols with a time of 3:21.56.
Freshman Phillip Jones and his diving teammates Jake Dorsey and Sal Vilardo also controlled the diving well. Jones and Dorsey took first and second in the one-meter diving event and the trio of divers swept top honors in the three-meter competition. Adding to the diving performance, Jones claimed the pool record with a score of 340.73 in the one-meter diving competition previously held by former Vol All-America Gabi Chereches.
"This is a good way to start the year," head coach John Trembley said. "Virginia has not been beaten at home in six years and I am very proud of the way we swam."
The Vols will be back in action Jan. 18-19 for the Dallas Morning News Classic in Dallas, Texas.
