EDMONTON, Alberta -- Former Vol Anthony Famiglietti (1999-2000) will not qualify for the steeplechase finals at the World Track and Field Championships after he placed 11th in his qualifying heat on Monday afternoon. Famiglietti clocked an 8:44.54 in the second and slightly slower heat to miss out on a trip to the finals later this week. Famiglietti, the youngest former Vol competing, finished 20th overall in his first World Championships Meet.
Reuben Kosgei of Kenya ran the day's fastest qualifying time in 8:21.96 to lead the first heat. The 15th and last qualifier, Christian Belz of Switzerland, ran an 8:31.57. Famiglietti finished second among the three Americans. Tim Broe of the U.S., the third American qualifier, clocked the sixth-fastest time of the first heat and 11th overall, an 8:27.26, to become one of the three additional qualifiers based on time. However, Famiglietti defeated USA Outdoor champion Tom Chorny (8:51.74) by about seven seconds. Broe and Chorny ran in the first heat. Famiglietti ran his career-best steeplechase time of 8:21.00 in Stockholm, Sweden on July 17. He clocked an 8:22.68 finish at the USA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June.
In a change of schedule, the first round of the 110M hurdles first slated for Monday has been canceled. Former Vol Dawane Wallace (1996-99) and the other high hurdlers will thus compete in three rounds instead of the originally scheduled four. Barring any additional schedule changes, Wallace will open his World Championships on Tuesday night. Additionally, former Vol Tim Mack (1994) is slated to jump in the pole vault qualifying section Tuesday morning.
