Lady Vols Begin Competition At Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA - Denita Miller, the first of four University of Tennessee track and field athletes to compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend, was unable to chart the kind of mark she was hoping for. The freshman managed only a throw of 144 feet, five inches and placed sixth overall Friday night at George C. Griffin Track.
Miller, from Liberal, Kan., entered the competition hoping to launch a throw that would improve her season best of 159-3. That was not the case, however, so she will wait to hear word from the NCAA early next week about a potential bid to the national championship meet in Eugene, Ore. on May 29-June 2. Miller currently ranks 12th in the nation and is virtually assured of a berth.
At the Georgia Tech meet, Laverne Eve, competing unattached, took top honors with a throw of 197-8. Florida State's Karen Rademeyer, who does not appear on the national list, was the highest finishing collegian. She was fourth at 147-11, while Miller was the next best university competitor.
Also competing in Atlanta was volunteer assistant coach Aretha Hill, who placed second in the shot put. Her top throw was 48-7.50.
For the Lady Vols on Saturday, sophomore Christie Elwin (Adelaide, Australia) will get things started in the pole vault at 4 p.m. Junior Diane Slinden (Menomonie, Wis.) will take part in the discus throw at 5 p.m. while sophomore Kameisha Bennett (Dayton, Ohio) competes in the 800m run at 6:45 p.m.
