Slinden Heads Lady Vol Party of Five at Texas Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Fresh from her NCAA automatic qualifying performance in the discus last weekend, University of Tennessee junior Diane Slinden and four of her teammates head to the Lone Star State to compete at the 2001 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, which begin Wednesday with the first day of the heptathlon.
Slinden, a product of Menomonie, Wis., who unleashed a personal best throw of 182-3 at the UC San Diego Spring Break Open last Saturday, is entered in Section A of the University/College Women discus competition at 5 p.m. ET on Friday. Freshman Denita Miller of Liberal, Kan., will also throw the discus but will do so in Section B at 2 p.m. Slinden is also slated to throw the shot in Section B at noon on Friday.
The first Lady Volunteer to see action in Austin will be freshman Lindsay Eck. The 12-time Kansas High School champion in hurdles and jumps from St. John's High School in Beloit will begin her first collegiate heptathlon at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The final three events will get underway on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Also making the trip to the University of Texas campus are pole vaulters Christie Elwin (Adelaide, Australia) and Mandy Bergey (Hillsboro, Ore.). The Tennessee twosome will head down the runway around 11 a.m. on Friday. Elwin, the 2000 Southeastern Conference Outdoor champion, is making her 2001 outside debut, while Bergey has posted readings of 11-1.75 and 11-5.75 to place first and third, respectively, at the SEC Quad and the Raleigh Relays during the beginning of the current campaign.
The remainder of the squad will be in action on April 7 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, Ga.
