KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- University of Tennessee senior diver Lizzy Flynt has been voted to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She was selected as a member of the Fall/Winter At-Large team for the University Division.
The 2001 honor marks the second Verizon academic accolade of Flynt's career at Tennessee. Earlier this year, she was named to the All-District IV First Team. Flynt was also selected to the district first team in 2000 and was voted to the Verizon Academic All-America Third Team. She is a senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, and sports a 3.87 grade point average. Earlier this spring, Flynt was announced as a finalist for the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Postgraduate Scholarship.
Flynt is also an All-American diver as she finished 10th on the platform and 13th on the one-meter at the NCAA Championships. She also won the platform at the NCAA Zone B Championships for the second straight season and was the runner-up at the Southeastern Conference Championships. Flynt was one of 15 athletes chosen to the first team from schools across the country. The at-large team includes the sports of cross country, swimming and diving, soccer, gymnastics, rifle and field hockey. Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Team members are chosen by a vote of CoSIDA members across the nation.
Flynt was one of four student-athletes from the SEC to make the first, second or third team as Kim Black, a swimmer from Georgia, was named the Verizon Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. Florida gymnast Teal Chiabotti was named to the second team and Arkansas' Lilli Kleinmann (cross country) and Mississippi's Sara Schauberger (soccer) were both third team members.
