NCAA Zone B Championships: Day 1 | Day 2
ATHENS, Ga. ---- The University of Tennessee women's diving team competed on the three-meter springboard during the first day of the NCAA Zone B Championships on Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Sophomore Jaime Sanger (Plymouth, Minn.) led the way for the Lady Vols as she finished eighth with a score of 491.20 while senior Lizzy Flynt (Auburn, Ala.) took 10th place with a score of 476.95. Freshman Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.), making her first appearance at the NCAA Zone B Championships, came in 38th with a mark of 205.00 and did not advance to the finals. The overall event was won by Louisiana State's Ashley Culpepper with a tally of 529.60.
"Jaime had a fantastic day on the board today," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She competed extremely well considering the field consisted of two Olympians as well as all three defending NCAA Champions. I was very proud of her effort today. She feels very good heading into the one-meter tomorrow, her strongest event. Lizzy did a solid job throughout the day and Kylee was a bit overwrought by the level of competition at her first NCAA meet."
None of the Tennessee divers qualified for the NCAA Championships on the three-meter board, but they will have another chance to qualify on Saturday with the one-meter and platform competitions. At last year's Zone B Championships, Flynt won the platform title.
The representatives for the NCAA field are chosen based on finishes in each event as well as results across all three disciplines. Zone B will send 11 divers of the 40 competing to the national championships where each diver who qualifies will compete on all three boards.
Action at the Zone B Championships will continue on Saturday with the one-meter springboard scheduled for 10:00 a.m. followed by the platform at 3:30 p.m.
