Track Vols Open USA Indoor Championships
March 02, 2001 | Men's Track
Both Vols finished the opening four events stronger than 2000 Olympic bronze decathlon medalist Chris Huffins (at 2,524 courtesy of registering no score in the shot put because of fouls) and Kip Janvrin (3,023), the third decathlon qualifier at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials and 21st at the Olympics. The Volunteers, both competing in their home state of Georgia (Sabo-Carrollton, Harris-Norcross), also are within striking distance from 2000 NCAA decathlon winner Bevan Hart (3,068). Scoring is tight as only 70 points separate fifth through 12th place. Tennessee’s Kevin Thompson was qualified to compete in the USA Indoors, but didn’t make the trip because of injury.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Bell missed his last-chance qualifying bid for the NCAA Indoor Championships by running a 47.44 in the 400M dash. The time stands .33 of a second off his career-best time set last weekend at the SEC Indoor Championships.
Harris and Sabo will complete the final three events (60M hurdles, pole vault and 1,000M run) of the heptathlon on Saturday. Additionally, Camron Howard will try to leap to the NCAA Indoor Championships with an improvement on his provisional mark in the long jump. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
