Vols In Action At USA Indoor Championships This Weekend
March 01, 2001 | Men's Track
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Tennessee will be well represented at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. Stephen Harris and Blake Sabo will compete in the heptathlon. Harris and Sabo earned their spots with qualifying marks of 4,033 and 3,861, respectively, at the Virginia Tech Pentatlon on Feb. 2. Kevin Thompson also qualified for the USA Indoors at the same meet, but will miss this weekend's competition because of injury. Dwayne Bell, who qualified for the USA Indoors at last weekend's SEC Indoors, will try to improve his 400M dash time to qualify for the NCAA Indoors. Likewise, Camron Howard will compete in the long jump with hopes of improving his NCAA provisional mark and landing a spot in the NCAA Indoors.
The USA Indoor Championships mark the last meet before Tennessee takes its contingent to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. Tennessee's final list of qualifiers should be determined by the middle of next week.
VOLS RANKED FOURTH IN LATEST TRACKWIRE POLL
Tennessee slipped slightly from last week's third-place tie to land in sole possession of fourth place this week in the Trackwire poll. The Trackwire rankings consider national leader lists in all events and other factors to attempt a prediction on the finish of the NCAA Indoor Championships. However, the Volunteers are projected to finish with 36 points, two more than last week when the Vols were tied for third. Additionally, first- place Arkansas' point total dropped from 47 to 41 in the latest ranking. So, even though Tennessee dropped a spot, the Vols only stand five points out of a projected first-place finish, the narrowest margin of the indoor season.
