Vols Defeat Florida; Remain Unbeaten
February 03, 2001 | Men's Swimming & Diving
"We were a little concerned coming into this meet," commented Vol head coach John Trembley. "It has been a tough time in Knoxville lately with illness and injury. It was an ugly, but big win."
The Vols won seven of the 13 events on the afternoon as the UT sprinters led the charge. The trio of Renalto Gueraldi (20.15), Chris Hussey (20.33) and Michael Gilliam (20.48) took the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. The Vols again flexed sprint muscles again in the 100 freestyle with Gilliam taking top honors with a time of 44.35 and Gueraldi and Hussey finishing third and fourth, respectivley.
"There were two great performances," said Trembley. "Gueraldi's win in the 50 free was huge. Gilliam continued to be a dominant 100 freestyler at this meet."
With the outcome still in doubt entering the 400 freestyle, the Vol sprinters came through again. Jeremy McDonnell and Brent Owen joined Gueraldi and Hussey on the winning squad the beat second-place Florida by more than three seconds.
The Vols opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay. The winning squad consisted of Gilliam, Chris Stewart, Jamie Graves and Owen. Other winners for the Vols included Greg Simpson (200 free), Shannon Roy (three-meter diving) and Andrew Bree (200 breaststroke)
Tennessee will close out the dual-meet portion of its schedule next week with a dual-meet at Kentucky. The Volunteers defeated the Wildcats earlier in the season at the SEC East Dual-Meet Extravaganza.
