SEC Indoor Championships: Day 1 | Day 2
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Head coach Myrtle Ferguson saw her squad triple their day one points on day two of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track Championships at the Nutter Fieldhouse at the University of Kentucky. The Lady Vols picked up points in the pole vault, the mile and the distance medley relay.
Freshman Erin Anderson improved on her personal best time in the mile from the day before to finish in sixth overall with a time of 4:56.16. Her performance comes on the heels of her third-place finish in the prelims yesterday. By SEC standards, it was the seventh best individual performance on the season, and ranks as the 15th best individual performance in Lady Vol history.
Over in the pole vault, sophomore Christie Elwin recorded a vault of 12-6 ¼ to take home seventh place. Her score is a provisional height for the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held March 9-10. The vault is the fifth best in school history tying her with Tracy Carrington. Last year, Elwin was the runner-up at the Indoor Championships and then proceeded to take home first at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
In the second to last race of the day, the team of Anderson, freshman Amy Ranker, sophomore Kameisha Bennett and sophomore Sharon Dickie finished in third place of the distance medley relay with a time of 11:53.68, which is a season best. Dickie was as far back as 100 meters from the front four as she took the handoff from an ailing Bennett, but slowly made up the time only to pass the third and fourth place runners on the last lap of the event.
Bennett had entered the day as the number one seed in the 800m finals where she recorded a provisional time of 2:09.31, but pulled up lame as she came out of the turn at the 300m mark due to severe cramps.
"This wraps up a most difficult season for the team as a whole," stated Ferguson. "Many athletes came out with season's or personal bests; however our total numbers and top-end quality was limiting as we could not cover all of the events. We are motivated and look forward to outdoor where added events such as the heptathlon, 10,000m, discus and javelin will prove to be great additions to the team's strength areas. The distance core are to be congratulated for a solid showing as coach Rodney Rothoff debuted in his first indoor SEC."
Other noteworthy performances for the Lady Vols were sophomore Diane Slinden's season-best throw of 51-11 ¾ and 12th place finish in the weight throw, and sophomore Mandy Bergey's 12th place finish in the pole vault.
This concludes the 2001 indoor season for the Lady Vols. Their outdoor season begins March 17 at the SEC Multi-team meet in Starkville, Mississippi.
